Similarly, The Commandant’s Own has been reinforcing the Marines’ public image since 1934 with their powerful performances. The human toll in WWII Pacific War is minuscule compared to the unimaginable if war breaks in the region today or this century. The 1945 two atomic bombs instantly killed about 70,000 in Nagasaki and 50,000 in Hiroshima. Japan lost conventionally 2 million dead, no number on the wounded and the U.S. lost about half a million, 55,145 Army, 29,263 Navy, 19,163 Marines and no number on the wounded. We must therefore understand that war is not an option. The current PRC leadership and the U.S. government should re-examine their respective policies in the Pacific and by all means, not start anything which will spiral into conflict.

Is re-enacting history more than just playing war?   In a world where (digital) media and museums nowadays seem to be the primary sources of historical knowledge, the work of Lise Zurné offers a fresh perspective on how we can experience and understand history. For a report with Trouw, Zurné visited the 277th Volks-Grenadier Division, a re-enactment group that recreates German anti-aircraft units from World War II. The Gunter Hotel, one of the oldest lodging facilities in downtown San Antonio, is expected to reopen in the spring after what may be its most extensive renovation since opening in 1909.⁠ ⁠ Owner Axle Capital Group is putting more than $50M into the 12-story hotel’s makeover, which is aimed at repositioning it to attract higher-income visitors. It’s also adding musical programming to highlight its history.⁠ ⁠ The land the Gunter was built on has been used for lodging since at least 1837, one year after the battle of the Alamo.
