Starting from Scratch | Children’s Choirs and Funding So you’ve had a chat to your parish priest and your fellow music ministers and you’ve agreed that your parish needs a children’s choir. What do you do next? What are the first steps to founding a parish children’s choir? Developing a budget First, establish with your parish priest and pastoral council what level of support the parish is willing to provide: what funding will be provided, what personnel and what other support will be committed. Put together a plan outlining what will be expected of the choir, the director, manager, other volunteers, resources, rehearsal spaces, funding for regular celebrations and recognition, awards, Christmas party and so on. Develop a budget and be realistic about the figures. Once you have established the Choir’s financial base, you will be able to determine which roles will be remunerated and which roles will be filled by volunteers. Strategically-minded church musician, with a vision to see a resurgence in young people singing in church choirs.
What can we learn from re-introducing children into our church choirs? From the experience of having my seven choristers, 8-12yo, join the adults for Choral Evensong for the first time, a lot. We can learn to discover afresh the joy of singing familiar music, with enthusiastic voices for whom it is but a recent discovery. We can learn that nothing needs to be 'dumbed down': we don't need to pander to some patronising notion of what children might find accessible - they can exhibit equal amounts of energy and joy singing music from the eighteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. We can learn that Choral Evensong might just be the ideal service for engaging young singers: lots of music, not too much yadda-yadda from grown-ups. We can learn how having children in the choir can grow the church itself, with the support of parents and families. But above all we can learn the POWER OF BISCUITS, and the advantage in creating enough space between the rehearsal and the service for their consumption. (I'm sure there wouldn't have been such leftovers, had not the biscuits been trumped by one of the parents bringing along cake. More learning, don't overlook the POWER OF CAKE!)

Gospel Singer Moses Bliss Faces Backlash for Allegedly Charging N7 Million for a Performance Moses Bliss, a prominent gospel singer, is currently under fire online for reportedly charging N7 million for performances. Critics argue that such a steep fee contradicts the humility and service typically associated with gospel music. Many are voicing their discontent, suggesting that this high charge is at odds with the core values of the genre. However, some supporters defend Bliss, arguing that the fee reflects the value of his talent and the costs involved in delivering high-quality performances. They contend that charging for performances does not necessarily undermine the message of the music. This controversy has ignited a broader debate about the commercialization of gospel music and the delicate balance between ministry and business. While some believe that the essence of gospel music should be about spreading a message rather than making a profit, others feel that artists deserve to be compensated fairly for their efforts and contributions to the industry. The ongoing discussion highlights the tensions between maintaining the spiritual integrity of gospel music and navigating the practical realities of the music business. #NaijaPerspective #NigeriaOpinions #NaijaComments #NigeriaEditorial

Important message for every voter- watch video attached!
This week on #MorningMika, I have a very special treat for you: My husband, Joe Scarborough, the host of Morning Joe, is a musician, but you may not know his background. Joe grew up in church communities in the Deep South. His mother had a master’s in music and worked as a music director and organist at churches while Joe was growing up. She taught him piano in between his church choir practices and Bible studies. He always loved writing rock songs, but it was gospel music from both white and Black churches that came most naturally to him as a writer. He’s private about his music, but when I heard a song he recorded this summer called "No Guarantees," I encouraged him to record and share the song about the importance of standing up and doing what’s needed to save democracy. Inspired by a Richard Cohen Washington Post column from 20 years ago that described the peaceful life of Jews at a German summer camp the year before the Holocaust began, Joe wrote "No Guarantees" as both a warning and a song of hope. I wanted you to hear it. Join me in watching and sharing this important message 👇 and remember you can make a difference this November at the voting booth 💪 Many thanks to this amazing group of singers and musicians 😍 : Roz Brown, Keisha Whitney, Jeremy Kelsey, Deirdre Fields, Dachonne Nicole, Tanesha Gary, Mike Hammond, Anita Wells, Shaina Kitchener, Tawana Shaver, James Alexander, Troy Weekes, Mitch Matlock #NoGuarantees #NewMusicFriday #MorningJoe #JoeScarborough #GoVote Know Your Value

Should you learn from the MASTERS⁉️… When I was in college studying voice, a common theme among my teachers was to sing in your own way. They advised against listening to other renditions of a song you're trying to learn and suggested relying solely on your voice and the sheet music. This was 20 years ago. Fast forward to today, with advancements in technology and evolving practices, I largely disagree with this approach. While the old method might work for some, I believe it isn't the best advice for most singers. To become great, you must first emulate the greats. 1️⃣ 🎵 If you aspire to be an exceptional classical singer with an amazing voice, it's beneficial to listen to renditions by renowned opera singers like Maria Callas, Jessye Norman and Renée Fleming, just to name a few. These professionals have honed their craft over many years, and you can learn from their nuances, tempos, and rhythms. Having a point of reference helps you understand where your voice fits and what audiences appreciate. 2️⃣ 🎶 Relying solely on sheet music and your voice can feel like driving blind; you might struggle with style, direction, and audience preferences. If you're serious about becoming a great opera singer, start by listening to your favorite renditions. 3️⃣ 🌟 Ensure you choose singers with similar voice types and ranges. Picking voices too different from your own can be challenging and unproductive. Follow those whose voices align with yours and who have achieved what you aspire to. #VocalMastery #VocalTechnique #ClassicalVoice 🎥 Heather promotion concert 🎶 full song here ⬇️ https://bit.ly/3woK97C

I could remember in the year between 2015-2016 when I first learnt how to make a sound with the mouthpiece, I drew the trumpet. In 2021, I used my salary as a salesman at Denet School of Music to buy a second-hand trumpet from a man who provided me with solfa notes that scale from major to minor keys. His name is Mr Beshi, and he attended the Catholic Institute of West-Africa ( CIWA). Today, I need not any other motivation to play with my solfa notes so that I needn't suffer much. I must tell you, it's a work that takes such wit and grit. Every day doesn't go by without asking what bathing is without music going to be for me? Everytime I hold the horn, either in the morning or at noontide, I tell myself this.
