City of Brotherly Love —> Paradise Coast I’ve made a move. Talk about a change of scenery! I mean it in my bones… Jefferson Neurosurgery is rarefied air. I’ll always feel connected with, and grateful for, the luminaries there… many of whom have become close friends. But sometimes the stars align, and you can catch a bolt of lightning… if you’re willing to take the leap and forego the well-worn path. The Hospital for Special Surgery has launched a new venture in Naples FL, thanks to Sheeraz Qureshi, and I’ve joined to help build the spine program. Uprooting my family and moving to SW Florida was no small decision. Here are some reasons we took the leap: 1. I’m not satisfied just publishing research on value-based care anymore. I also want to build something in the real world: a one-of-a-kind musculoskeletal program that systematically offers the right treatment at the right time to the right patient. 2. I’m excited to help grow an ASC-centric, minimally-invasive spine practice that is focused on high performance, teamwork, efficiency, and the patient experience. 3. The leadership team at NCH is truly unique. It’s such a mission-driven and physician-friendly organization… thanks to the culture established by Paul Hiltz MHA FACHE and Jon Kling. 4. Naples isn’t the worst place in the world to call home! 5. Outcomes research isn’t just for PubMed. We’re going to measure our performance and costs, map our patients’ care journeys, and share this information with employers, payers, and the public. 6. Did I mention that I’m building this spine program from scratch, shoulder-to-shoulder with Nick Clark, MD… my brother-in-arms, former co-fellow, and MIS surgeon-extraordinaire? This is actually reason #1, #2, and #3! Creating something new is exciting but risky. Doing so with a close friend is special. Over 71k physicians exited the workforce from 2021 through 2022 in the U.S., alone. At the reported rate of 30k physicians joining the U.S workforce annually, it’s estimated the U.S. faces a physican shortage between 38k and 124k by 2034. We need every residency program to push recruitment of quality talent with a new focus and innovative strategies. But, it doesn’t stop with physicians and advanced providers. We all must aggressively recruit, train and support endeavors to correct critical nursing and allied health professional shortages, too. The challenges are huge but failure to correct current and projected workforce deficiencies will be catastrophic.

🏥 A Visit to Queen Victoria Hospital: Where History Meets Innovation 🏥 Today, I had the privilege of visiting Queen Victoria Hospital, and it struck me just how unique this place is. Unlike many of the more "sterile" trusts we see today, this hospital is steeped in history, yet continues to lead in modern healthcare. From its pioneering role in plastic surgery during WWII, where the incredible efforts of the 'Guinea Pig Club' reshaped patient care, to the state-of-the-art facilities being used today—the blend of heritage and innovation is truly inspiring. 💡 Modernisation is crucial, but maintaining the heart and history of an institution like this is equally important. Queen Victoria Hospital manages to honour its past while embracing cutting-edge technology to deliver excellent care to its patients. It’s a reminder that while we push forward with digital transformation and new innovations in healthcare, we should never lose sight of the values and legacy that make each institution special.
