At this year's ASRS – American Society of Retina Specialists Annual Meeting, Dr. Sunir Garg, Co-Director of Retina Research at Wills Eye Hospital, spoke with HCPLive about the the efficacy of pegcetacoplan injection in preserving visual function. Data presented at the Meeting marked the first time a geographic atrophy therapy has displayed a positive visual function benefit according to a prespecified endpoint. Learn more:

The 3rd episode is up: "Mastering Coronary Bypass Graft Longevity: Intra- and Post-Operative Best Practices" by Heart Corner: Innovations in Cardiovascular Science. This document provides a clinical consensus statement from the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Cardiovascular Surgery and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Coronary Task Force outlining best practices for the intra-operative and post-operative management of conduits used for coronary artery bypass grafting. The authors review the scientific evidence behind various techniques and medications used to preserve the integrity of arterial and vein grafts used for CABG surgery. They discuss the importance of appropriate harvesting techniques, storage solutions, and antithrombotic and lipid-lowering therapies. The authors also highlight gaps in knowledge and suggest future research directions to improve the long-term patency and efficacy of CABG conduits. https://lnkd.in/e2Y_i558

Ophthopedia Update:Peripheral retinal finding on fluorescein angiography in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2): Classically, peripheral vascular changes in the retina in patients with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2) are described as vascular attenuation seen in the late stages of disease on the Weill Connell Ophthalmic Severity Score (WCOSS) staging system. We describe isolated, mild, peripheral vasculitis with peripheral arteriolar dropout identified by fluorescein angiography in patients with a WCOSS grade of stage 2. We believe this vasculitis represents an early vasodegenerative phase of disease that leads to the vascular attenuation seen in later stages of the disease. #Ophthalmology #Eye #Ophthotwitter

A patient at HonorHealth Research Institute is one of the nation’s first — and the first in Arizona and the Southwest — to undergo a non-surgical, catheter-based procedure with a new type of stroke-prevention stent that eliminates blockages in neck arteries that could potentially cause a deadly stoke by depriving the brain of oxygen. The Neuroguard Integrated Embolic Protection (IEP) system is an experimental treatment for carotid artery stenosis, also known as carotid artery disease, a condition in which fatty-waxy deposits known as plaque builds up and blocks the normal flow of blood in the large arteries on either side of the neck. Left untreated, this condition can lead to stroke with severe complications, which could include death. The physician who performed the procedure is Venkatesh Ramaiah MD, FACS, a vascular surgeon and director of HonorHealth’s vascular services. The first patient to undergo the procedure as part of the Research Institute’s Performance III clinical trial is Roslyn “Sunny” Gomes, 76, of Glendale, Ariz., who has suffered from peripheral artery disease for years: “I feel a lot better today than I have. I really love Dr. Ramaiah. He’s been really good to me. He’s saved my right leg twice now.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g3HfADs9

In this episode, host Ally Baheti interviews Dr. Minhaj Khaja about iliocaval reconstruction. Dr. Khaja begins by sharing how deep venous disease typically presents and his clinical workup. He emphasizes the importance of gathering prior imaging, taking a thorough history and comprehensive physical exam, and calculating Villalta scale and Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS) for deep venous disease. He also shares his approach to complex cases, from setup, to workflow, to follow-up care. Thank you, Charles Mack, MD, New York-Presbyterian, and Weill Cornell Medicine, for highlighting our lead product and first-in-a-new-class pharmacologic preconditioning agent, RBT-1. The article shares promising results from our recent Phase 2 study, where RBT-1 demonstrated safety and efficacy in elevating anti-inflammatory and antioxidant responses crucial for mitigating post-operative complications, including prolonged ventilation, prolonged time in the ICU, and readmission to the hospital within 30 days. These findings have paved the way for our ongoing Phase 3 PROTECT trial to further validate RBT-1’s impact on patient outcomes. Click here to read more: https://lnkd.in/gBg69zPw.

Ophthopedia Update:Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC) Differentiates Retinoblastoma from Coats Disease on MRI: Coats’ disease can be difficult to differentiate from retinoblastoma. While MR imaging of retinoblastoma and Coats’ disease have been examined for differentiating features such as eye size, vitreous seeding, and shape of retinal detachment, there is a lack of data on apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). ADC is a measure of the diffusion (of water molecules) within tissue, and is commonly clinically calculated using MRI #Ophthalmology #Ophthotwitter #Scicomm

Ophthopedia Update:Balancing benefits and risks: the case for retinal images to be considered as non-protected health information for research purposes: The economic and societal costs of vision impairment and eye disease are significant and growing. Retinal images contain a wealth of clinical information and are utilized for detecting diseases at an early stage, monitoring disease progression, evaluating treatment effectiveness, identifying clinical endpoints, and guiding individual patient care patterns. Retinal images are derived from different modalities, e.g., fundus photography, posterior segment and optic nerve optical coherence tomography, fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography angiography, indocyanine green angiography, extended ophthalmoscopy, multifocal electroretinography, perimetry, etc. #Ophthalmology #ophthotwitter #eyecare

Here is more evidence that has been presented that SLT really should be our first line of treatment for glaucoma. The landmark LiGHT Study has had a new analysis that shows a 29% reduction in the rate of mean deviation progression. SLT is a safe and popular treatment and as a glaucoma specialist, this is a game changer on how we manage open angle glaucoma. 😀 https://lnkd.in/gASVDrfr

PET/CT is poised to become a key tool for imaging the coronary arteries – a clinical imaging exam that can reveal early warning signs of fatal conditions when patients present with symptoms of chest pain, experts say. The “hybrid” scan – which combines molecular PET and anatomical CT images – may have its highest potential in visualizing early signs of so-called “perfusion deficits” (regions of obstructed blood flow). https://ow.ly/ybaX50Rfh69 #PET #CT #PETCT
