In EEX3226: Assessment of All Young Children, we hosted a lively "Mock School Board Meeting." During this exercise, students debated the pros and cons of high-stakes assessments. Each participant assumed a persona—such as a teacher, parent, school board member, or professor—and was assigned a position to defend. They conducted research to understand their assigned character's perspective and developed key arguments to support their stance. One by one, they presented their cases in the simulated school board meeting, culminating in a debriefing session where we discussed the insights gained and reflected on the experience. To add more depth: This activity not only helped students grasp the complexities of high-stakes assessments but also fostered empathy by encouraging them to see issues from various viewpoints. It honed their research and public speaking skills while promoting critical thinking and collaborative learning. The debrief allowed us to tie theoretical concepts to practical applications, solidifying our understanding and appreciation of diverse educational perspectives. HOORAY! AT LAST!! WE ARE SLOWLY RETURNING TO EDUCATIONAL SENSE AND SENSIBILITY Finally, sense and sensibility are gradually being restored to classroom education. The focus of educational authorities and system managers is again firmly fixed on the benefits to students and teachers of direct instruction and explicit teaching. It is a case of ‘again’ because of this methodology and phonetic teaching - word recognition and reading - was the primary practice in our classrooms until the late 1970s and early 1980s. In the interests of change and dodgy experimentation and to make teaching more exciting, we explored alternative teaching and learning models. They may have seemed exciting and ‘different’, but they focussed on more trivial and less effective teaching and learning practices. Both teaching effectiveness and educational outcomes have suffered. I rejoice in education returning to the best and most effective practices of the past. May they never again be abandoned

Me and team had a group discussion about quality education: support adult literacy programs to enhance lifelong learning. In today's rapidly evolving world, education should be a lifelong pursuit. During a recent discussion with peers, we explored how supporting adult literacy programs is key to fostering continuous learning and growth. Literacy opens doors not only to better job opportunities but also to personal empowerment, enabling individuals to engage more fully in their communities and adapt to new challenges. By investing in adult literacy, we can help bridge knowledge gaps and ensure that education remains a tool for everyone, no matter their stage in life.
