Two years ago, inflation soared to 9.1%! Today, it’s down to 3.0%. While that sounds like a win, the 2022 inflation spike still impacts our wallets. Inflation measures price changes, not price levels, so even with zero percent inflation now, prices remain high. Want to understand how these changes affect you and what steps you can take? Is it gonna happen? A fed rate cut this year? So many hopeful waiting wishing. 😅 From the article. “U.S. inflation slowed in May, an ease in price pressures that boosts the prospect of interest-rate cuts by the Federal Reserve later this year. The consumer-price index, a measure of goods and services costs across the economy, was essentially flat from the month before and up 3.3% from one year ago, the Labor Department said Wednesday. In April, prices had risen 3.4%. Core prices that exclude volatile food and energy items rose 0.2% in May and were up 3.4% from a year ago; both were the mildest gains since 2021. Both measures of inflation were softer than economists predicted.” #inflation #fedrate #lending #costofliving #life https://lnkd.in/gBBHYxnx

Here are the monthly inflation metrics from October 2023 to February 2024. Hard to see why so many people are declaring that inflation is now benign given the direction of the recent monthly numbers. Certainly, it is important to look at year/year results, but we shouldn't ignore these month/month comparisons. https://lnkd.in/gaSJgkg3

There are signs that US inflation is continuing to cool, in line with our base case soft-landing scenario, although the market's current pricing of close to a 70% chance of a first rate cut in March may be too optimistic.
Cooling core CPI supports the case for a soft landing
