Ohlone College is proud to announce the graduation of Arianna Grillo, a standout student who has exemplified the College’s commitment to fostering bright futures. As part of the newest group of alumnae celebrated at the May Commencement on Friday, May 17, 2024, Arianna’s journey, and achievements highlight the transformative power of an Ohlone education. Arianna’s journey to Ohlone College began in high school when she discovered her passion for environmental engineering. “It was really easy to get a start in that with Ohlone,” Arianna shared. “The counselors provided me with the necessary information to pick the classes I needed to transfer to the institutions of my choice. Additionally, I’ve found that Ohlone has incredible STEM programs with bountiful opportunities that I’ve benefitted from considerably.” This summer, Arianna will embark on her next chapter as an environmental engineering intern with TRC Solutions, conducting fieldwork in environmental consulting across the Bay Area. In the fall, she plans to transfer to UC Davis to continue her studies in environmental engineering. “I’ll be doing fieldwork in environmental consulting at various construction sites in the Bay Area and analyzing data I collect from the job,” Arianna explained. Arianna’s journey is a testament to the importance of integrity, maturity, and teamwork in leadership. “No matter what leadership position you hold, everyone can benefit from a team with integrity. It’s important to speak up if you’ve got a lot on your plate. You can prioritize your needs while ensuring that your team stays on schedule.” Learn more about Arianna's bright future at https://bit.ly/3V1IexP

Meet Gabrielle. Gabrielle is an EPA Office of Research and Development Pathways Intern in the Air Methods and Characterization Division (AMCD). We spoke with her about: 👩🔬Being an EPA intern, 🧪PFAS, 🌟Her catalyst for change & 🌎Environmental Justice. No time to be inert, let’s jump in… Gabi works on the AMCD team, which is at the forefront of developing analytical methods for measuring airborne per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and emerging contaminants. https://lnkd.in/e5jPRXap She first got involved in environmental work as an undergraduate student after learning how pollution can disproportionately impact underserved and overburdened neighborhoods. After that, she knew she wanted a career that would make a positive difference in people’s lives. While working as a Pathways Intern, Gabi is simultaneously working towards her Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, focusing on measuring airborne PFAS in North Carolina firehouses. PFAS are chemicals that are used in many products and may be linked to harmful health outcomes. PFAS can be found all around the world -in people, animals, food, and the environment. Gabi added that the AMCD team’s research is important because it means EPA has solid analytical methods to measure PFAS accurately and consistently in the environment. She takes pride in contributing to the team that develops these methods and hopes her work will help advance the research to better manage industrial emissions of PFAS into the atmosphere. Environmental challenges like PFAS are one of the reasons we DOUBLED the number of internships at EPA this year, so there are more opportunities for students like Gabi to bring fresh ideas and engage in meaningful research. When we asked Gabi for her advice for students looking to get their start in environmental protection, she said, “Follow your heart and do work that brings you fulfillment. Build skills that allow you to work on anything that interests you.” Thank you, Gabrielle, for sharing your EPA journey! Ready to apply your skills and tackle our country’s most pressing environmental challenges? We rely on a diverse range of skilled professionals to fulfill our mission. Let’s talk about externships!! What is an Externship? Introduced by Extern, externships offer a new approach to work and learning. A platform that offers students and learners an opportunity to work with some industry leaders on real-world problems and gain industry exposure on myriad subjects. The programs are virtual, flexible and easily accessible. While most of the programs are focused on students, working professionals can also apply for some externships. In a world where entry level jobs require 3-5 years of experience, every learning opportunity counts, especially if the learning opportunity is with some industry pioneers like PwC, National Geographic, The Home Depot, Beats by Dre and more! Last year, I was looking to learn something new and become a better problem solver and the Credera Externship on DE&I Data Analytics and Consulting offered me just that. A perfectly structured course plan with learning resources, access to company meetings and a chance to contribute to a real case the company is working on, made my experience absolutely worth it! If you’re someone looking to experience the corporate world and gain some work experience, this can be a wonderful aid for you. Below are some externships that I personally find very interesting and useful for any student: Marine and Community Conservation Remote Externship by National Geographic An opportunity to research and explore a marine conservation issue and identify how communities come together to sustainably resolve it (Offers a $500 stipend) https://lnkd.in/gxRJTpvd Non-Profit Consulting Externship with PwC Open to undergraduate students only, I wish I knew of this in my college days. I would have surely applied for this externship to gain strategic consulting skills to become a tactful problem solver. (Offers a $500 stipend as well) https://lnkd.in/g4yu-QiA Corporate VC & Business Analytics Externship with HP Giving you a chance to build market research, strategic planning, data analytics and presentation skills in a single externship. https://lnkd.in/gsdmKvjS Other than these, they have several other externships around Digital Marketing, Deal Sourcing, Competitive Intelligence, Branding Strategy etc. Do check these out and share with your classmates/colleagues/friends looking for new opportunities to learn and grow. #learning #growth #externship #internship #opportunities #job

I once admitted to a room full of water and wastewater operators that engineers don't know everything. You know what happened next? They 🥳 cheered and 👏🏽 clapped! ..😅 You see, there's an age-ol' #stereotype that engineers consider themselves superior. That whatever solution they design WILL work. But if you ask those executing those very designs, they might have a different opinion. I've seen this in university and even in the workplace as early as my internship days. Engineers today are definitely making that stereotype history! And who is more "today" than our beloved #GenZ? Check out Water Canada magazine's latest feature (https://bit.ly/WCAug2024) where we tell you about some incredible engineering students who are disrupting the status quo to help change this perception. Read about a capstone project where Water Movement guided these #GenZEngineers to bridge the connection between #engineer and #operator AND find a #solution that works.

Ecosystem and Biodiversity I conducted a Water Ecosystem Survey at a Pond in Simraha. The colour of the Pond was Brown. The lake had Thin sheet of foam which signified the presence of chemical pollution. I also found waste around the water body. Most of the waste were HDPE. #internship #environmentalscience #spnrec #civilengineering Earth5R Training and Placement Cell SPNREC, Araria

Principal Instructor at University of Colorado, Boulder, Founder, Construction-Education, and Principal Training Specialist at Safety Function
Summer has arrived and newbies are joining your projects. Go back in time and recall your first days in construction. The jobsite looks and sounds chaotic. The jargon used on site sounds like a foreign language. Here is a recent quote from a young field engineer - "As a novice in the industry, I felt an overall uncertainty about all the details. I had to learn on the fly - leaving me quietly Googling terms or asking embarrassing questions to my superintendent." We're asking new interns and engineers to navigate a complex construction environment while also performing important tasks. For the sake of safety, production, quality and all the other critical factors on a project, put yourself in their shoes and take time to train and orient your new folks this summer. If you're looking for time-tested resources, Construction-Education can help.
