The equity markets over the past few years have been dominated by uncertainty. Launched today, the 28th edition of Capgemini’s World Wealth Report 2024, reveals a climate that has seen a significant rise in population and wealth for high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) worldwide. These HNWIs are shifting from cautious asset preservation to balancing safety and growth. As the industry gravitates towards sustained profitability, the highly concentrated ultra HNWI segment present an opportunity. The Capgemini Research Institute's #WorldWealthReport is out, and it reveals that the number of high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) rose by a significant 5.1% in 2023, increasing their global count to 22.8 million, with a collective wealth of $86.8 trillion. Notably, India witnessed impressive HNWI wealth growth of 12.4% and a population increase of 12.2%. It’s safe to say that HNWIs are back in business this year. What I find particularly interesting is that HNWIs are continually seeking the right balance between safety and growth in their #investments. Many individuals we spoke with emphasized the role of emotional and cognitive biases in decision-making. The global environment remains uncertain despite rising investment figures due to geopolitical instability, inflation, and national elections. Wealth management firms should pay close attention to these behavioral shifts and heightened client expectations. #AI, once again, emerges as the transformative force. BY MCKINSEY & COMPANY: The great acceleration! The COVID-19 crisis has intensified existing trends, widening the gap between those at the top and bottom of the power curve of economic profit. Will your strategy keep you ahead of the accelerated pace of change? The fault lines between industries and business models that we understood intellectually before the COVID-19 crisis have now become giant fissures, separating the old reality from the new one. Just as an earthquake produces a sudden release of pent-up force, the economic shock set off by the pandemic has accelerated and intensified trends that were already underway. The result is a dramatic widening of the gap between those at the top and the bottom of the power curve of economic profit1—the winners and losers in the global corporate-performance race. Along with the accelerated pace of change, however, comes a unique opportunity to unlock big strategic moves. Our research found that companies that pursued big strategic moves persistently, through every phase of the economic cycle, increased their odds of outperforming their peers. Much of the organizational inertia that usually stands in the way of unlocking these big moves is now gone, as the crisis has rendered obsolete the budgets and personal targets that make such moves so hard to achieve. To understand how the COVID-19 crisis is shifting profit pools, we have used changes in market capitalization to calculate market-implied longterm economic profit for the largest companies globally.2 While the question of whether share prices are a fair reflection of our new reality is open to debate, we aren’t as interested in the overall market-capitalization levels as in the patterns emerging among companies and industries. And those patterns are meaningful, consistent across measurement periods and with our clients’ experience, and very different from what we saw during the global financial crisis of 2008–09. Our analysis reveals that the gap in economic profit between the top corporate performers and everyone else has widened dramatically. In effect, the crisis has accelerated a trend that was already present (Exhibit 1). Between December 2018 and May 2020, the top quintile of companies grew its total market-implied annual economic profit by $335 billion, while companies in the bottom quintile lost a staggering $303 billion. And while the specific numbers can fluctuate from day to day, the larger trend is unmistakable: a gap is opening up, and it’s rapidly expanding. That’s a pattern that has been evident since 2010. Any company/government entity trotting out this nonsense is by default raising the costs of performing its role(s) without any material recompense. Mystical hand-waving and sloganeering about "equality" can only ever reduce shareholder profits/government program efficacy. People either earn their roles and perform those responsibilities, or you are shoehorning in deadweight with the only justification being feeling nice about your pet ideology fulfillment.

In the past few weeks , i have been reading and attending some insightful reports/webinars on #M&A trends and outlook for 2024. Although i wanted to compare Bain & Company and McKinsey & Company reports side by side, unfortunately i would have to put each in individual posts. The Bain report for 2024 discusses a decrease in M&A activity due to #valuation gap and other challenges such as uncertain #macroeconomic and #geopolitical front coupled with #regulatory hurdles. The report notes that #strategic M&A remained active, with certain sectors like #healthcare and #energy showing resilience. The report emphasizes the widening performance gap between #frequent Acquierers and their less active counterparts indicating that continous engagement in M&A can lead to strategic advantages. As Energy sector was something i wanted to deepdive further on in addition to regional M&A activities trend, from Bain report following was something I understood: - After 3 years of growth, #energy #transition deals stabilized in the first 9 months of 2023 indicating reassessment of priorities towards low-carbon future. - There is some sort of balancing act at play as Energy and natural resources companies are navigating the #tradeoff between traditional and new low carbon initiatives. - Factors such as geopolitical unstability, supply chain costs, are slowing down the deals. - From Regional Point of view, #Brazil remained appealing despite domestic slowdown to International buyers due to expedited regulatory reviews. Foreign acquisitions outpaced domestic ones in the country. - India M&A market continued to thrive in 2023 particularly in midmarket segment. Active sectors being #renewables #infrastructure and #healthcare . Stable and improving M&A landscape in 2024. However, pre-deal diligence and post-deal planning strategies remain key in navigating competetive market. - In Middle east , Sowereign Wealth funds (SWFs) accounted 86% of deal value , diversifying investments across various sectors. Investments in Asia by ME SWFs surged by nearly 60% in 2023. Actively decarbonizing their portfolios and investing in green assets reflecting commitment to Net Zero targets According to Bain M&A report, we will see a lot of #Scope oriented deals than #Scale oriented deals driven by #electrification and the need to build integrated ecosystems. Scale deals will also be seen to cater to the increasing demand in Emerging economies (my view).
