Here are some tips to help you work like a dog: #1 - 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐦: Approach every task with the same zest and eagerness a dog shows when they see their favorite toy. Enthusiasm can make even the most mundane tasks more enjoyable. #2 - 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝: Dogs are known for their ability to focus on the task at hand, whether it’s fetching a ball or learning a new trick. You've heard of S.M.A.R.T goals right? Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Bound. Many have heard of it, but few are able to effectively implement it. And I finally understand why that's the case. Dog training has enabled me to observe SMART goals through a new lens - and the thing people struggle with most is making the goals **Achievable**. Too often people expect the dog to be able to achieve something just because that's what they think the dog should be able to achieve. I've found that it is sometimes due to the dog guardian genuinely not being aware of their dog's ability levels or the difficulty of the task they're asking the dog to perform. But other times it's because the dog guardian is so stressed and overwhelmed that they simply don't have the capacity to approach their dog's behavior with curiosity. This feels directly relatable to the workplace and manager / employee dynamics, doesn't it? How often in your career have you felt that your manager has set goals for you that were unachievable? Or worse, thought you were the problem if you didn't achieve the goals? How often have you set goals for your employees just to have them fall short of expectation that you thought was achievable? I took this silly dog to work today and my co-workers were appreciative. So I’m sharing some Haikus about the top 5 reasons to bring your dog to work. 1. Stress Reduction Calming dog nearby, Anxiety fades away, Peaceful hearts prevail. 2. Enhanced Morale Joyful wagging tail, Lifts the mood, connects us all, Smiles in every eye. 3. Increased Engagement Furry icebreaker, Opens hearts and starts the talk, Lively meetings flow. 4. Encourages Physical Activity Pause for doggy walk, Fresh air breathes new energy, Focus returns strong. 5. Promotes a Positive Work Culture Pets at work, pure joy, Balance found in wagging tails, Happy, healthy team.

Meet Wendy & Molly Molly is a 7 year old moggy, a rescue cat who’s been with us a large part of her life. She knows everything about her home. But she didn’t. Before living with us she was in her own routine, had plenty of life experience. The sights, the smells, best places to nap. She also knows our routine, where she can toilet, where she sleeps on a night. Wendy is a 13 week old Miniature Dachshund. She was born here with her mummy and daddy present. Wendy didn’t understand all the smells, all the sights, where to toilet, where to play and most of all had no idea of our routine and how to interact with the rest of our “farm” of animals. We are getting there, but now Wendy is so well behaved. She understands our routines, bedtimes, dinner times, where to toilet and how to interact with the household. Who gives a crap about your dog on a Saturday afternoon Andrew? My point is, I’ve learned a lot from the patience, resilience and time needed to embed a new animal in our home. Some settle quicker than others. Some need a little bit more TLC. When you welcome someone new into your business, adopt the same practise you would when homing a new furry family member. I’m not saying check in on them every 5 minutes to make sure they haven’t peed on the floor… 😂 But nurture them, coach them, be there for them, be present. Discover their personal needs, goals and ambitions. LISTEN to them. Both Molly and Wendy have completely different backgrounds, experiences and races. But they are inseparable now and co-exist wonderfully. Over my years I’ve managed quite literally hundreds of employees and I’ve made many mistakes along the way, but I’ve tried. In summary, when you welcome someone into your business, give them a home, give them your time. Some may take a long time to embed, others won’t. But make them feel home. Giving them a water bottle and a laptop isn’t home. PEOPLE are home. I must have done something right over the years. None of my employees ever peed on the floor… Disclaimer.
