Pinot Grigio - In Trentino, vintners face a challenging choice in marketing: they can use the DOC Pinot Grigio delle Venezie, the DOC Trentino with varietal designation, or the DOC Valdadige. Pinot Grigio is a significant asset for Trentino and is highly regarded by its producers. Château Pavie Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (Premier Grand Cru Classé) 2008 Made predominantly from Merlot and Cabernet Franc, Saint-Emilion wines tend to have a rich, mouth-drying tannic structure, which is balanced by the more juicy characteristics of plum and black cherry fruit, along with chocolate and sweet spice, developing savory tobacco and cedar characteristics with age. The best Saint-Émilion wines will exhibit a terrific mineral vein, the result of vines being planted on the region's limestone escarpment. Vines planted on sandy soils tend to produce grapes that make lighter styled wines. Situated on the right bank of Bordeaux, the region of Saint-Émilion can boast of producing the most diverse range of styles, partly due to differences in soil types, from gravel to limestone to sand, but also thanks to production variations and winemakers looking to make their mark. Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Pauillac (Grand Cru Classé) 2005 Bordeaux Pauillac wines are rich and concentrated, full-bodied reds with grippy tannins, and characteristic notes of cassis, cedar and cigar box spice. The best examples come from blends with a base of high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon and are often considered the quintessential example of a Bordeaux wine. Pauillac, in Bordeaux's Left Bank Médoc region, boasts well-draining gravel soils, which in turn translates to higher quality wines; and those from Pauillac age extremely well. Three of the five first-growths from the 1855 classification of the Médoc are situated in Pauillac: Lafite, Latour, and Mouton-Rothschild.

RED IN THE RED Reality checks can be brutal. A snapshot of vineyard sales in France show that red wine vineyards might be worth less than previously thought. Statistics can lie – but sometimes they don’t. Supply and demand shows there has been an 8% drop in sales of vineyards in France. Price-wise there have been winners (eg Saumur, Saint-Joseph, Cotes du Jura) and losers (Bordeaux and Cotes du Rhone). It all depends on the appellation’s popularity. Red wines trends in the red. In Bordeaux, vines can be bought for less than €10,000/ha, which is a 45% drop in value in 5 years. As a rule of thumb, while Northern France prices are going up, prices in South-West France and Languedoc-Rousillon prices are going down. People are just drinking less red wine. They also prefer less alcoholic wines. So that even famous regions now have less value: eg Medoc (-29%) and Pessac-Leognan (-10%). Price is sensitive to the potential to adapt to climate change. So lucky grand cru vineyards planted with Pinot Noir in East Alsace are up 4.1%. Of course, the valuation of a vineyard at any point of time is irrelevant – unless it happens to be the point of sale. Shifts in notional value should not be too alarming, but if your nest egg is a red wine vineyard in Bordeaux or the Rhone Valley it might be wise to keep a back up piggy bank.

INTRODUCING MAISULAN FROM RIOJA ALAVESA We first encountered Maisulan over a decade ago while living in Switzerland. Intrigued by their project, we decided to explore their website for more information. We then arranged a trip to Rioja and reached out to Eva. Generously, she took the time to give us a tour of La Guardia, showcasing other bodegas in the area before visiting hers. We shared a delightful lunch together and then toured a couple of their vineyards. During our visit, we connected with Luis and Eva, and it was immediately clear that Eva is deeply passionate about their project. Strolling through their vineyards, including those for the El Hondon wine, we gained valuable insights into the region, its challenges, and the priorities of Eva and Luis, particularly their commitment to ecological practices and the principles of Fukuoka. While their wines are traditionally crafted to some extent, they are not your typical Riojas. El Hondon, in particular, stands out with its smooth and elegant profile. When we decided to revise our business plan to focus on distribution, Maisulan was, without a doubt, the first wine we decided to include in our catalogue. In the region of Campania, on the slopes of Mount Taburno lies Torre Varano, a boutique producer known for crafting quality wines on just 12 hectares of vineyards shaded by the Taburno. The hillside soils within the Taburno DOCG zone allow for the production of high-quality wines with distinctive aromas. This region showcases extraordinary wine-making skills, cultivating five ancient grape varieties - Aglianico, Falanghina, Greco, Fiano, and Coda di Volpe - which thrive in the optimal soil and climate of Taburno, expressing their full potential. I am fortunate to have come across Nicola D Occhio, an innovative producer, during the challenging times of the pandemic in 2021. Despite uncertainties about the future, especially among Italian producers, the vineyard and winery work remained unaffected by the pandemic, with vines proving impervious to the coronavirus. Boar Doe 🐗 🦌 🍷 Bordeaux is one of the most well-known French wine regions. But, do you actually know what’s in your Bordeaux? Whether red or white, Bordeaux wines are mostly blends. Red Bordeaux are most commonly a combination of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec grapes. Carmenère can also make an appearance. White Bordeaux are typically a mix of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes. They can also include Colombard, Merlot Blanc, Ondenc, Chenin & Ugni Blanc. There are three rivers at the heart of the Bordeaux wine region: The Garonne, the Dordogne, and the Gironde Estuary (where the two rivers come together). ➡ The right bank of the Dordogne and Gironde has mostly clay soil, which is great for growing Merlot grapes. ⬅ The left bank of the Garonne and Gironde has more gravelly soil, which is better for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. This is helpful to know if you have a grape preference. We’re bigger Cabernet fans in my family, so here’s a trick I share with them: your left hand forms a “C,” so if you prefer Cabernet Sauvignon, buy Bordeaux wines from the left bank. Another thing to remember: Bordeaux isn’t always expensive, just because it’s French. Part 1 ⁠ ⁠ Is Domaine Leroy the most polarising of all the Domaines of Burgundy?⁠ ⁠ I think so...⁠ ⁠ I admire Madame Bize-Leroy for her tenacity and determination in pursuing her desire to handcraft what she considers the "world's best" and the most terroir-amplified wines.⁠ ⁠ Biodynamic viticulture with punishingly low yield is reduced by about 50% from what is allowed in the vineyard and the winery. Domaine Leroy's high-trellised vineyards are easy to spot and look healthier and brighter than their peers.⁠ ⁠ With such a dramatic yield reduction, you are helping the vines to ripen, and the flavours become amplified and more prosperous; however, in doing so, the terroir signature becomes less apparent.⁠ ⁠ When drinking wines from Domaine Leroy, I often wonder if Burgundy terroir is strong enough to reveal itself, and more often than not, the answer is yes. However, the stylistic imprint is strong. L’Insolito 2021: The colour is medium straw. On the nose citrusy, but not very expressive. In the mouth nutty, with a freshness that makes the mouth water. The aftertaste is medium long. This Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC is made by Vicari winery in Morrro d’Alba. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico is a subzone of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC in the Marche region of Italy, the oldest winegrowing areas around Jesi. Both superiore DOC and riserva DOCG wines are made within the classico zone. The use of Verdicchio has been documented in the Marche region of central Italy since the 14th Century, but there is suggestion that the variety could have originated in Veneto, where it is known as Trebbiano di Soave. Historians believe that Venetians migrated to the Marche area after the plague, bringing animals and plants, and it is thought that Verdicchio was among these. The variety adapted well to Marche's terroir. Verdicchio is a versatile variety, used both for light, easy-drinking table wines, and for more complex, ageworthy examples. It is commonly lauded by critics as being one of Italy's best white wine grape varieties. For this bottle I paid 14.50 EUR directly at the winery, when I visited it during last year’s All Saints Holidays.
