Cinema is one of the most powerful tools in shaping perceptions and realities. For decades, films and television have influenced how we see ourselves and how the world sees us. As Africans, we have the opportunity to redefine our image, our narrative, and our legacy by taking control of the stories we tell. When we produce and share our own experiences, dreams, and history on screen, we not only change how others view us but also build soft power that influences culture and thought worldwide. What role do you think African cinema and television should play in shaping global perceptions of our continent? How can we ensure that our stories reach and resonate with audiences around the world? #AfricanCinema #OurNarrative #ReclaimingOurStory #GlobalPerceptions #AfricanStorytelling #SoftPower #ChangingTheNarrative #AfricaOnScreen #TellingOurStories #CulturalInfluence

Associate Protection Officer at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Project Management PMD DPro | Digital Marketing | Digital Advocacy Communications Specialist | Gender Specialist | Asylum Migration | Youth Engagement
The theme for the 2024 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is "Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking. This year's global campaign for World Day Against Trafficking in Persons urges accelerated action to end child trafficking. Children represent a significant proportion of trafficking victims worldwide, with girls being disproportionately affected. 1 in 3 victims of human trafficking globally is a child. Children are twice as likely to face violence during trafficking than adults, according to the UNODC Global Report on Trafficking in Persons (GLOTIP) 2022. Amid overlapping crises such as armed conflicts, pandemics, economic hardships, and environmental challenges, children are increasingly vulnerable to trafficking. Furthermore, the proliferation of online platforms poses additional risks as children often connect to these sites without adequate safeguards. Traffickers exploit online platforms, social media, and the dark web to recruit and exploit children, utilising technology to evade detection, reach wider audiences, and disseminate exploitative content. It is in this light, that UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Nigeria is collaborating with sister UN agencies on an initiative to provide informative content to combat the false narratives peddled by traffickers; as well as empower young filmmakers in the country. This is more so as the HCR continues to operationalise its 10-point-plan-action. The collaboration with IOM Nigeria, the lead agency on this initiative, is strategic and moves forward the localisation agenda towards implementation of the June 2022 framework of engagement signed by both agencies. It is exciting to lead this collaboration on behalf of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Nigeria with IOM Nigeria, UNODC Nigeria. All thanks to senior colleagues Edward Ogolla, Godwin Bwire for entrusting me to lead this collaboration. Judith Audu, we are grateful for your advocacy and service in amplifying the voices of the forcibly displaced in #Nigeria. Four films or series. 1- John Woo’s Silent Night (2023), 2- Doug Liman’s Road House (2024), 3- Albert Hughes’s The Continental (2023), 4- Marcela Saïd and Julien Despaux’s Ourika (2024), all seen on Amazon’s Prime Video, hence distributed by Amazon Prime Video, all dealing with violence in our societies and all claiming that violence is justified top answer and respond to a violent society, a violence coming from outside our community, and that outside can introduce anti-immigrant accusations or plainly racist claims, both anti-white and anti-any-ethnicity. Does it help us understand this violence ? Does these films enable us to devise a proper response to prevent and solve such violence? Both times, a resounding NO. But in both cases, it plays in the hands of the most extreme forces on the nationalist side of life, the side that refuses to consider those who are not pure according to their definitions as the cause of all our problems, and not only those people but also all products that may come from the countries concerned by these ethnic groups. This is true in the USA, in Canada, with Mexico playing the wide-open gate to the previous two, and all over Europe. What game are these streaming services playing? Preparing coming elections! But it might go the wrong way for them. Now what is the wrong way? Good question. No answer because the ballot boxes will be the only valid answer. First stop, the European Elections in June 2024.
