Did you know that with transition to GA4 the definition of bounce rate has changed? Bounce rate has been one of the most popular metrics in Universal Analytics (UA), often strongly associated with data analytic as a whole. Folks are using it commonly, and many don’t create a data report without it. But many did not acknowledged that bounce rate means now something different. ➡ UA: In the older version of GA, a bounce meant (by default) a visit where the user entered the site, didn't navigate to any other pages, and then left. ➡ GA4: In the early days of GA4 there were rumours that there will be no Bounce rate at all and it will be replaced by other new metric - Engagement rate 🎉. The uproar of marketing and analytical world was significant, leading Google to announce that bounce rate would indeed be included in GA4. But the funny part is that it is simply an opposite of engagement which is a visits to your site that: → Is longer than 10 seconds, or → Has more than 2 page views, or → Has a triggered conversion event (now called key events). Personally, I find the new bounce rate in GA4 much better, thanks to the 10-second condition. The bounce rate definition in UA was too general. Thanks to that a session where a user reads all the content on the landing page and scrolls whole page up and down twice is not counted as a bounce. ℹ️ Additionally, we can tailor the engagement rate to our needs by adding extra conversion events (again, now called key events) which makes the bounce rate even more accurate (e.g for example, you can add a 50% scroll conversion event on your landing page).

I have never worked with a metric that resonates with Marketers more than the Bounce Rate. As most analysts know it's a far from perfect and is can be a bit annoying having so much focus on it; I think I must have explained what it is thousands of times in my career. However, that's more than made up with how much businesses understand it. There is a real simplicity to it, and an impactful name that helps it embed is the psyche. With GA4 there is a fundamental change in the calculation of Bounce Rate in GA4. In GA3 it's been based on the share of sessions that are single page sessions In GA4 there has been a fundamental shift to try and invert the logic to make things about measuring engagement. An engaged session being defined as; time based (longer than 10 seconds), or more than two page views, or a conversion event. It's a bit of a shift but the Bounce Rate is now the inverse of the Engagement Rate. #GA3 #googleanalytics #GA4 #DigitalAnaltyics
