We had very special visitors yesterday - six students who are in the 10th grade from MC2 Stem High School and Cuyahoga Community College Metro campus. They came in to present their Mental Health Capstone project to our doctors and social workers. They did an excellent job! Special thanks to Lori S, Maggie C, and Elicia H, the facilitators guiding the students work.

Is your school or district doing right by their gifted and talented students? GT students are often forgotten. Assumptions like “they’ll be fine on their own” cause more behavior referrals, suspensions, recommendations to counselors, depression, apathy to learning, underachievement and school dropouts than people realize. If you do not support your emotionally and cognitively complex children. they WILL NOT BE OKAY! Ask, “are we providing our gifted kids opportunities to learn about their Giftedness? “ As a gifted coordinator, coach, and previous gifted resource teacher, I pull our students at my school site and help them learn about their Giftedness. This is just one of the resources that I have created, and use, to help gifted students learn about themselves. We owe it to them to challenge them. Provide them with chances to learn about how they learn. Support their creativity. Advocate for themselves. Build confidence. 🌍 Today is World Teachers' Day 🌍 It's a day to recognize the profound impact that teachers have on children around the world. Yet, it’s disheartening to see that the respect for educators is dwindling. Teachers are often expected to go far beyond their contractual hours, and many are spending their own money on classroom materials and supplies. This is just one of the many stressors educators face today. To add to that, some school boards claim they are better suited than teachers to decide what resources and materials should be presented in classrooms. How is this even a thing? We need to acknowledge that teachers are highly educated professionals—many holding multiple degrees—and they are continuously evolving and learning to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of education. When those outside the profession impose their views and expect what works for one child or family to work for all, it only fosters animosity and adds to the stress teachers face. Let’s do better. It’s time to step up, recognize the incredible expertise of teachers, and support them as they nurture and guide the next generation.

Another impactful session with the remarkable adolescents at CS Academy! This time, engaging with the 12th graders on navigating peer pressure and academic stress. Initially challenging to get through to them, it evolved into one of my most memorable sessions in recent times. ADOLESCENTS = POWERHOUSE 💪 The energy and potential within these soon-to-be adults are truly inspiring! If we, as adults (caregivers, parents, and teachers), can embrace their individuality, recognize their strengths, and empower them to excel, we can shape a brighter future. Our session delved into peer pressure, emphasizing the significance of character development and the power of saying NO. We explored strategies for managing academic stress and handling emotions, fostering a holistic approach to their well-being. Special shoutout to Gen Z terms, making my experience even more enlightening! As a facilitator, it was incredibly fulfilling. One resounding plea from these budding adults: "I want to be heard!" Let's heed their call with patience and understanding. While our lives may be complex, our ability to process and respond surpasses theirs. Let's Listen, Process, and Engage rather than simply direct and react. Remember, WE are the ADULTS, THEY are the ADOLESCENTS. They deserve our time and unwavering support to blossom into responsible adults.

What I find interesting in this article is the mention of grace that was afforded students when we initially returned to buildings from COVID. It seems as if the grace has run out and now some schools are resorting back to punitive measures to curtail behavior. Why is this important? Check out this quote: “Roughly 40% of all suspensions went to Black students, though just 21% of students are Black. About 38% of suspensions were issued to students with disabilities, a group that represents about 22% of all students”. Knowing that many students are dealing with mental health issues, what else can schools do to support them as an alternative to suspension? How are we developing student support plans that benefit and improve student social-emotional health and well-being. I can’t pretend to have all the answers, but I know that something must be done to interrupt the increasing number of suspensions, specifically with Black and Brown students and students with disabilities. This is a well worth listen. We need to focus on the enrollment behaviors of our students, not their age. When thinking of any group of students who manage their education around their work, a key concept is opportunity cost. Given all the demands on their time, the more an institution can do to reduce lost time, a major opportunity cost, the more successful the school can be in retaining this diverse group of students.
