The Burgundy 150’s latest peak was in October 2022. Since then, the index has fallen 17.4%, more than the Liv-ex Fine Wine 100, the industry benchmark tracking the most traded wines on the secondary market. However, it’s worth noting that on a five-year basis, the Burgundy 150 remains up on the Liv-ex 100, having peaked considerably higher in October 2022. The August issue of Harpers Wine & Spirit is here, just as the sun graces us and a new government steps in. These changes bring fresh opportunities for our industry: a heightened thirst for quality drinks and a government seemingly prioritising economic stability and business growth. We're thrilled to feature Miles Beale of the Wine & Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) on our Soapbox page. Beale eloquently welcomes the focus on economic growth and emphasizes the vital role of the drinks trade in this mission. His call for a dialogue with the new government is clear, particularly stressing the urgent need to permanently retain the duty easement on wine before it expires on February 1, 2025. This issue also unveils our annual Unusual Suspects report, showcasing emerging wine regions. Tim Atkin MW perfectly captures this sentiment: “More regions are crafting great stuff than ever before… This has changed the way we perceive ‘fine’ wine.” Dive into our detailed exploration of Central & Eastern European wines, spotlighting Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Georgia, and more. Plus, discover wineries from the Azores to Japan, and insights into China’s UK market potential. Join us in celebrating this diverse and exciting time for the drinks trade: https://lnkd.in/dPqcnXka #HarpersWineSpirit #WSTA #WineTrade #EconomicGrowth #UnusualSuspects #WineDiscovery #FineWine

Rioja Maintains its Competitive Advantages in a Turbulent 2023. In 2023, the DO Rioja experienced a decrease in wine sales both domestically and internationally due to the economic recession. Domestically, sales declined by 2%, particularly for red wines which saw a 3.5% drop, but Rioja maintained a 27% market share. Internationally, despite an 11% decrease in Spanish exports, Rioja increased its market share to 39.6%. Exports to Ireland and Belgium saw growth, but there were declines in key markets such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States. Fernando Ezquerro, President of the Regulatory Council of the DO Rioja, acknowledged the economic challenges and emphasized the importance of maintaining Rioja's competitiveness. New regulations were approved to highlight the wine's origin, changing "Municipality Wines" to "Village Wines" and adding the designation "Vineyard in". These measures aim to strengthen the differentiation of Rioja wine. Moreover, the diversity of the appellation was highlighted, emphasizing the origin. Source: DO Rioja #wine
