With a half-century-old sorghum festival and a centuries-long whiskey bootlegging tradition, this is hardly a stereotypical wine region.

What is old vine? How does it affect the wine? #Oldvines, which are abundant in the vineyards of North-eastern Spain, produce even more terroir-specific, concentrated wines due to their lower yields and well-established, deep roots. A particular characteristic of old vines is that they have to be manually harvested and from one vine you can only obtain 75cl of wine. Today, these old Garnacha vineyards are 50-100 years old on average, and at different altitudes in exceptional surroundings. Viticulturists from the five Designations of Origin (DO) that primarily cultivate Garnacha in Spain (Calatayud, Campo de Borja, Cariñena, Priorat and Tierra Alta) are reclaiming the history of this variety and producing wines with a strong sense of place. New wave in the wine industry- prowein24. Running from prowein last week to vineyards around the region this week I have only shared first impressions of the show that finished. Here are some more elaborated points: - Fresh wines are sought for - Whites have already taken over reds - Second gen winemakers in their 30s are on the scene - All of this paves the way for a change in the industry - Climate is a concern - fresh wines do not come from warmer spots - Sustainability is important - but with no sales not so much - Buyer structure is different - Russia is missing fully - Vineyards in cooler spots - a difficult ask With all of this in mind, I have seen a number of producers doubling down on reds, particularly from places where this has been a tradition, such as Spain. Despite that Spain has had the best appearance on the show, in my opinion. p.s. I am somehow thinking we will be blanc de noirs a bit more p.p.s. Another point of view on the fair is here: https://lnkd.in/d3zcdjv3

You know Argentinian Malbec, but what of Argentinian Sangiovese? The grape has a long history in the country, but as Malbec soared in popularity, Sangiovese seemed to fall off the country’s vinous map. BIRA Wines wanted to honour their Italian heritage and create Sangiovese the Argentinian way, in the picturesque vineyards of The Uco Valley. We recently caught up with Santiago Bernasconi, co-founder of BIRA Wines, in the latest instalment of our Discover series, to uncover the hidden gems of The Uco Valley and talk all things Sangiovese. We’re not going to South Korea empty-handed! 😉 As you may recall, Babette will be heading to South Korea this October (yes, the entire month!) to showcase the finest selections from our producers. Naturally, Tabunello will be among the carefully chosen items. Here’s a recap of what you need to know about this exceptional red: 🍷 Tabunello is a varietal wine made from the benchmark grape variety of the winery. The 2HA winery, known for introducing Sangiovese to Hungary, carefully cultivates the vines with restricted yields. Grapes are hand-harvested into 12 kg boxes and meticulously selected both in the vineyard and prior to destemming. The vinification process features spontaneous fermentation in open wooden vats at controlled temperatures. The wine is aged in 225-liter barriques for 12 months, then bottled without clarification or filtration. It undergoes a minimum of 12 months of bottle aging before being released to the market.

Director of Innovation at Hammeken Cellars S.L. | I search and implement new ideas to make my winery grow | Wine lover, team player, effective communicator.
In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of Emerging Appellations, regions that have shone for the quality of their wines but are far from being the most well-known wine regions. The old becomes new again in these emerging Terroirs of #Spain, where old vineyards and ancient grape varieties, mostly unknown, are the most cherished treasure by consumers. Spain stands as a laboratory for wine #innovation. From rural Spain to modern-day Spain, the connection with the land and tradition remains alive, as evidenced by Gredos, located in three appellations, including #Cebreros. The wines from this region have been recognized, standing out for their uniqueness in today's wine landscape. With granitic, siliceous, and slate soils, #Garnacha wines develop an exclusive identity. Proof of this is #SanctaYusta, one of our latest novelties with DOP Cebros. 🍷 These are wines you shouldn't miss out on!
