👉 The Department was proud to host our first ‘Values in Action’ awards ceremony this week. As we serve the citizen, instilling civil service and departmental values has never been more important, considering the changing context introduced by blended working and external demands for increased responsiveness. 📢 The purpose of the ‘Values in Action’ competition was to seek examples and stories of how our staff are embedding and living our values of Public Service Ethos, Ambition, Collaboration, and Quality & Delivery. We wanted to hear from and recognise employees and teams who consistently exemplify these values in their work. ✔ We were delighted to receive 31 outstanding entries from across all areas of the Department demonstrating that not only are our values understood, but also how they have been embedded into our ways of working. Twelve entries made the final short list with five winners announced at the ceremony, hosted by our Secretary General Ken Spratt. All entries received have truly inspired us and have demonstrated the impact and meaning behind our shared purpose, values, and behaviours. 💻 The Department also launched a new employee experience portal called ‘EXchange’ at the event. The portal is a one-stop shop that sets out the ‘give and take’ of being part of the Department of Transport, including health and well-being, equality, diversity and inclusion and an employee journey map aligned with our values and associated behaviours. 🏆 Congratulations to all the teams and individuals who participated this year. We are very proud of their dedication and commitment to living our values as we serve the citizen to the best of our ability. #staffengagement #publicserviceethos #ambition #collaboration #qualityanddelivery #values #awards #awardsceremony #staffrecognition

It’s been great to see so much interest in our refreshed strategy and upcoming Q&A session. We’re looking forward to answering your questions in next week’s Q&A session with our Chief Executive Steve Haszard as well as sharing the next steps we’ll take as Aotearoa New Zealand’s primary work health and safety regulator. Our new approach has three components, a strategy, a functional model, and an operating plan. Our simple and clear strategy defines the wider health and safety at work system and reflects our role in the system, how we will undertake that role, where we will focus our effort, and how we will measure our impact. You can read our strategy here: https://lnkd.in/gaZFDq7Y Work is underway on a functional model that defines the key functions we must do well to deliver our strategy and an operating plan that brings the strategy to life and sets out our organisational priorities, initiatives, and activities; how resources will be allocated; and the outcomes we aim to achieve. These documents will be available in the coming weeks. Together the three documents will demonstrate how we will effectively and efficiently undertake our role.

The Business Leaders Health & Safety Forum have put together “Been there Done that – a report into New Zealand’s repeated health and safety failings” 📓 A six-month effort by senior business and industry leaders reveals some critical insights: 📊 New Zealand has not learned from past health and safety failures. 📊 Despite being a $4.4 billion annual problem, there’s no national plan of action. 📊 Progress on the 2018-2028 Health and Safety Strategy has stalled. 📊 90% of surveyed leaders want the government to prioritize health and safety improvements. 📊 The Health and Safety Act is adequate, but supporting regulations and enforcement need attention. 📊 There’s a lack of central coordination and ownership from government agencies. The report outlines five actionable recommendations for the government, requiring no additional spending or long timelines with a clear path forward to improve health and safety performance. You can view the full report now👇 https://lnkd.in/gK28cfHh 👏 Special thanks to Taskforce Chair Toby Beaglehole and members Andrew McLeod, Chelydra Percy, Susan Huria, Jeremy Lightfoot, Mike Bennetts, and Stacey Shortall for their contributions.

Do EAs really need appreciation? The answer is a resounding 'Yes'. EAs are more than intermediaries applying their heart and soul in the organization through their dedication which often is unrecognized. Yet, they maintain calm and self-motivation despite stress. Recognizing their efforts is crucial for their motivation, improving their performance and career satisfaction. During the recent IAA week, we requested feedback from managers of nominated Executive Assistants (EAs). The responses were overwhelmingly positive, revealing that while many EAs feel unappreciated, their managers highly value their contributions. This feedback underscores the strong work ethic and motivational boost for the EAs. This is manager's appreciation for Kashmira Talati from her Executive Mr. Sameer Sud (We would like to extend our gratitude for taking time out of your busy schedules to acknowledge her). This truly demonstrates the organization's commitment to employee growth and empowerment, fostering a supportive and appreciative work environment. We have asked Jeremy Meek, CEO of THE KITE ACADEMY TRUST at the #MATPN event about Trust leaders addressing the recruitment and retention crisis. ''We have a people and culture strategy which maps out everything potential employees will see from the first time they hear about our Trust. We've been very specific about how we will advertise jobs, how we will recruit for jobs, how we will onboard people, the CPD that they will be offered regardless of the position that they hold or the Trust team that they work in or the academy that they are based at...'' The implementation of a robust people and culture strategy and continuous professional development opportunities is crucial for effectively addressing the recruitment and retention crisis. At BeReady, we work with over 100 of MATs offering tailored solutions to support Trust leaders in implementing these strategies. Our fully funded professional development opportunities provide incentives for both recruitment and retention efforts, fostering a thriving workforce. Additionally, our Wellbeing Champion programme enhances wellbeing initiatives, aligning with Trusts' people and culture strategies, all while ensuring continuous staff development. Partnering with BeReady enables you to transform your recruitment and staff development, effectively addressing the challenges in the education sector highlighted by industry leaders like Jeremy Meek. #education #wellbeing #workplacewellbeing #professionaldevelopment #retention #recruitmen #educationsector #training #CPD #BeReady

If you’re an environmental health and safety professional, achieving a high degree of employee engagement can be important for achieving functional excellence. This can also be essential for generating widespread support for your organization’s overall goals. Most people today highly value the concept of health and safety in the workplace, especially since a safe setting benefits them personally, as well as professionally. But whether your employees actually go the extra step to implement best safety practices on the job on a regular basis may come down to how evolved you are as a leader, according to Richard D. Fulwiler, ScD, CIH, FAIHA, President of Transformational Leadership Associates and retired Director of Health and Safety Worldwide for Procter & Gamble. Fulwiler and Louis J. DiBerardinis, MS, CIH, CSP, Director of Environment, Health and Safety at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), are co-directors of Management and Leadership Skills for Environmental Health and Safety Professionals at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. This program helps environmental health and safety professionals with a wide range of experiences to build their leadership capacity by finding new ways to better engage their teams in order to improve their organization’s overall performance. https://ow.ly/5AU850Rkqg0
