Could refillable wine bottles stimulate circular sustainability? 🍷♻️ • For her #UID24 grad project, Mari Elmqvist (BFA) is looking at how a return system for wine bottles could make reusability an attractive alternative for customers. • ”Today, almost half of the total carbon emissions that a bottle of wine produces comes from the bottle itself. However, the glass wine bottle carries strong emotional value for both wine producers and customers. It’s something that recyclable packaging has struggled to solve. So, I’ve explored a new return system for wine bottles, aimed at improving the ’returnability’ of bottles amongst consumers”, says Mari Elmqvist. • • • #RoadToUID24 #gradproject #industrialdesign #sustainabledesign #circulardesign #wine #bfadesign

What is on the horizon for the food and beverage industry? Would you drink wine from a carton? Could you imagine enjoying wine poured from a carton at your next first-class restaurant dinner occasion? Is the traditional glass wine bottle now unsustainable and soon to be a thing of the past? Yesterday's "Turn the Dial" conference in Perth, led by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, challenged everyone's thinking - a package should save more than it costs! Some wine connoisseurs or purists may say, "No way!" But just like corks are a thing of the past, who knew that consumers would welcome that change? And how about how we shop? Reusable bags and refilling containers are now normal practices - feeling good about doing the right thing! Did you know: 81% of Australians agree that demonstrating a commitment to sustainability adds value to a brand or products 73% are happy to pay more for demonstrated sustainability, eco-friendly practices 58% say they would stop buying a product they had previously been loyal to if they discovered it was not committed to sustainability. Notwithstanding the discussion of the social license, facts about food wastage, and value-adding solutions. These topics are challenging but must be considered by the food and beverage industry. Yesterday, Jacquie Kay from the APC, Jen Riseley from Pomewest, Nicole Giblett from Newton's Orchards and I attended the 2nd Turn the Dial conference at the Perth Convention Centre, which was eye-opening. We'll be sharing key takeaways and industry presentations in the coming weeks as horticulture adapts to changing consumer, retailer, and government-driven considerations in this rapidly evolving landscape Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development #turnthedial #buywesteatbest

Back in December 2022, SevenFifty Daily posted about wine trends to watch for in 2023. Their leading one was regarding sustainability: "There was a time when consumers were unconcerned with monocropping and chemicals, and cares dissolved with the uncorking of a heavy glass bottle. Not anymore. Wine drinkers are asking questions about how grapes are grown, workers are treated, and wine is packaged. They want wines that align with their values, and their values are focused on a sustainable future". This is not just a trend, but fast becoming a way of life. If your company and products are not on already on a journey to achieve holistic sustainability, best you start. #winebusiness #sustainability #winenz #SWNZ #carbonzero

".... restaurant managers claim that opening a bottle of wine leads to potential waste, because if it isn't poured in 24 hours, it needs to be dumped out." Or, the restaurants could pour their wine-by-the-glass program from kegs, which leads to - better economics for the restaurant - less liquid waste - better quality glasses of wine - reduced carbon emissions and - less packaging waste. Free Flow is happy to have helped supply premium wines in reusable stainless steel kegs for the past fourteen years. Restaurants and Wineries are increasing margins on wine at restaurants with wine-on-tap from stainless steel kegs - a package that is reusable for decades. Kegs provide better taste and less waste. Wine is susceptible to oxygen, light and heat. Wine inside a keg, however, is kept cool, dark and safe from oxygen transfer. Reusable packaging is better for the environment and reduces reliance on new packaging supply chains. #Wineontap #sustainability #reusable #packaging #recycle #circulareconomy #environmental #sustainable #reuse #refill #freeflowwines #winequality https://lnkd.in/gMtUwzCE
