Big news, everyone. The winners of the Business Worldwide Magazine (BWM) Global Corporate Excellence Awards 2023 are live, and I can now reveal that… I won the 🏆 ‘Best CEO in the Event Management Industry’ and 🏆 ‘Best Corporate Learning Culture Innovator’ categories! It’s a huge honour as I wasn’t expecting it at all – especially to win, let alone win two awards. 🙏🏽 I want to share a heartfelt thank you to the BWM award panel (especially David Jones from the team who contacted me) and, of course, to the wonderful individual or company who put me forward anonymously. It would be amazing to know who you are, should you wish to reveal your identity, but if not, just know that I am flattered and very grateful that you took the effort to recognise my work. These award titles reflect my personal and professional values and my aim to inspire others and work alongside them to create culture shifts - which often means them recognising their own talents and learning to shout about them. Plus, delivering innovative and fun events around the world is never a chore, so being recognised for my work in this area too is a huge compliment. 🙏🏽 These types of awards are never achieved in isolation, so a big thanks to my team, especially Victoria Gibson and Frank Höger, as well as the meany mentors and advisors who challenge me to be better. And the Oscar goes to…. Nominations for this year’s Oscar’s have been announced this week and it got me thinking about recognition and acknowledgment. Everyone appreciates a pat on the back for a job well done. We want to feel valued and respected by our employers and our colleagues. We spend a lot of our lives working so recognition of our commitment, loyalty and achievements makes us feel good. However, just like the Oscars, most people don’t come away with a prize or an award. Their work isn’t acknowledged or lauded, publicly or otherwise. And we have got to feel ok in ourselves about that. We have to find our own satisfaction in a job well done regardless of what others think of us. We need to feel peace of mind that we have done our best and made a positive contribution. Chasing or expecting appreciation and recognition can lead to resentment and a reduction in productivity. I saw a recent post from an executive (a former CEO) who had received a couple of different lifetime achievement awards from the industry he spent his career in. The executive said he was honored and rightfully gave credit to the employees of the companies he led. That’s all well and good but making sure those people are recognized at every opportunity is more important. I know someone who traveled all over the world for several years accomplishing major goals for their company. Their EVP even accepted an award overseas for all that work at a major industry event. Great, right? Well, except for the part where he came back to the office, showed off the award to his staff and said, “Does anyone know what this award was for?”. Don’t be THAT executive. The one who doesn’t have a clue about major projects your teams are working on and how long and how hard they’ve been working on them. Likewise, don’t be a direct report to that executive who fails to make sure they know what their people are doing and how it’s contributing to the company. There are things that separate the great bosses — the ones employees all want to work for — from the ones that make people want to work somewhere else. Recognizing the accomplishments of the people who work for you as they’re happening and being openly thankful for the way those accomplishments reflect on you is at or near the top of the list.

Lately, I have seen a trend in our office (especially when it's appraisal season). It's about recognition at work. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome to feel appreciated. But should we be asking for gold stars for just showing up? Here's my take: Recognition should be reserved for the truly exceptional moments – those times when someone knocks it out of the park or goes above and beyond. And not simply for showing up on time and doing the work we are paid for. It's on us and the management to put this thought across and keep people's expectations in check. It is our job to guide the way. I know I am going to get a lot of flak for this post. But what are your thoughts on this balance between acknowledgment and the daily grind? There is SO So much I LOVE about this! A few Authentic leaders/colleagues I definitely can nominate…how about you? It’s a lesson we try and instill in our kids. A vision most parents likely have. Love the shift into the vision “to be” in business too! Have you ever sensed someone wasn't being authentic? The same rings true in leading our teams. The key to having a team that has your back is to keep it real, every step of the way. I firmly believe that my team stands by me because I lead with authenticity. What they see is what they get! I'm not afraid to show vulnerability, admit when I don't have all the answers, or own up to my mistakes. Leading with authenticity means being transparent about what's happening or not. When you lead authentically, your team knows they can trust you = Strong/Trusting relationships. A special recognition to a special person ! Celebrating 20 years at Robert Half is no small achievement and your dedication, leadership, and positive attitude shine through in every aspect of your career. From young graduate ICHEC to Sr Director @ Robert Half, an amazing career and a path with a lot of milestones and achievements. Starting at CFA in Zaventem, growing with the business and taking up more responsibilities in leadership roles along the way, moving from one region to another, and taking different leadership roles, achieving recogniton like Reach for the Stars, MDM programs etc,. and most of all being loved by your colleagues. What I see is a dedicated person with an ever positive mindset, strong understanding of the business and always keeping the bigger picture in mind. You are always in for a good party and some fun and we share a lot of good moments certainly to cherish as great memories and they certainly bring a big smile on my face. You have grown to a strong professional, loyal to her values and not only being a professional and balancing this with being a mother of 2 sons who keep you busy and of whom you talk very proudly.
