Deadline 2/7 The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) is offering three (3) mini grants of $4,950 each to eligible entities to expand upon the Healthy Eating & Active Living Program’s Rhode Island Streets Transformation Project, supporting demonstration projects that showcase the benefits of community design to promote physical activity and active transportation. Eligible projects include: Implement temporary demonstration/tactical urbanism projects - temporary bicycle lanes and public spaces, traffic calming for a day or a month, colorful crosswalks, turning parking lots into pop-up parks Coordinate the development of or education/advocacy for Green and Complete Streets ordinances - Coordinating a Green and Complete Streets presentation to a city or town council, paying a law firm or advocacy organization to draft an ordinance, Community organizing activities to support ordinance passage, plan development, or project implementation (eligible applicants will be from municipalities without G/CS ordinances) Provide opportunities for community engagement and mobilization - putting on open streets events, leading neighborhood walks, bike rides, dance classes, or other outdoor activities, starting a walking or biking school bus program, hosting bicycle/scooter safety education workshops, public art installations or performances on/alongside current and future bit paths, sidewalks, or bus stops, or mobilizing community members to advocate for the implementation of existing G/CS ordinances Other appropriate and relevant ideas for supporting greener, safer streets and active transportation.

Community is invited to join a new Burnie Works Action Group for the Middle Years Project. Last year, Communities for Children Burnie and Burnie Works explored how families of primary school-aged children access and navigate supports in Burnie. The aim: to co-design a product or service to meet community needs. We call it the Middle Years project. It is for families with children aged 5 to 12 years (Prep to Year 6). 🔸NEXT STEP: Build an Action Group to help guide us as we move into the next stage - turning your ideas into reality! We are holding a 'Come and Try' workshop on Thursday 7 March. This will give you a chance to come and see what it's about. It will be an opportunity to dip your toes in and see if it’s right for you – no pressure. 🔸DETAILS🔸 📆When: Thursday 7 March ⏰Time: 10am to 1pm 🏠Location: Burnie Surf Life Saving Club Facilitated by Fiona Miller, grassroots worker, and facilitator. Yummy morning tea. Safe and welcoming space. We have $100,000 to create something that the community wants and has designed. We will trial and test this work and collect the data to inform change for the future. Imagine if we design something here in Burnie that changes people’s lives, and we get to keep it going! 🌟 Community Engagement Spotlight for #EconDevWeek 🌟 The PCDC has funded $250,000 in community engagement grants for Parks and Recreation improvements! 🌳 Shade structures at Black Locust Park and Pflugerville Heights Park help extend playtime, protect children from UV rays, and keep playgrounds cooler. With these upgrades, 25 citywide playgrounds now have shade. 🌤️ Improvements to Royal Pointe Park, including new shades, an upgraded basketball court, new swings, and hardware, rejuvenate the park system, lowering the average age of equipment to just 7.7 years! ❓Why are these upgrades important? What is community weaving In the practice of Community Weaving, individuals learn from Master Weavers who share their experiences and instruct them in the utilization of tools, techniques, and technology to cultivate their own social support networks within various spheres such as schools, neighborhoods, organizations, and businesses. Like-minded individuals, termed Good Neighbors, collaborate to establish shared resources such as furniture warehouses, childcare cooperatives, clothing exchanges, and community gardens. Additionally, they organize recreational activities like rafting trips, campouts, ropes courses, barbecues, softball games, paintball competitions, and vision quests. Furthermore, Community Weaving facilitates community improvement initiatives through the application of FSN technology, spearheading endeavors such as the closure of problematic venues, disaster response, establishment of neighborhood watch programs, fundraising for beautification projects, revitalization efforts, and the incubation of new businesses. To support these endeavors, local organizations such as the American Red Cross, Public Health Department, schools, faith leaders, businesses, and various civic, social service, and youth organizations are enlisted as FSN Partners. They provide essential resources such as free space for activities, access to speakers and educational materials, and complimentary trainings for FSN volunteers. FSN partners are equipped with the necessary training as Community Weavers, enabling them to effectively leverage the resources of the FSN to better address the needs of their clients. #communitydevelopment #educationalleadership #healthcare
