Jera, Japan's largest #power generator, has successfully concluded a three-month trial at its #Hekinan thermal power station, co-firing 20% #ammonia with #coal. The trial, conducted in collaboration with IHI, showed #promising results with no increase in nitrogen oxides, a 20% reduction in #sulphur #oxides, and negligible nitrous oxide #emissions. Operational #stability was comparable to coal alone. Based on these findings, #Jera plans to commence #construction for #commercial ammonia co-firing by July, aiming for broader #adoption by March #2025. Ammonia, known for its #zero #CO2 emissions when burned, is seen as a potential low-carbon #fuel #alternative, aligning with #Japan 's goals to mitigate coal-fired power plant emissions despite some #environmental #concerns.

LIQUID AMMONIA ⚙: Japan’s Ebara Corporation has announced the successful operation of its new leakfree canned motor pump for liquid ammonia. The product was delivered to Japanese power generation company JERA Co., Inc.'s Hekinan Thermal Power Station for the demonstration of fuel ammonia substitution, and it has successfully operated using liquid ammonia on-site. Ebara developed this leak-free pump in 2023. The delivered product features a design where even the motor part is immersed in liquid ammonia, allowing it to operate without leaking liquid ammonia externally. In this demonstration test, the product was installed in an outdoor environment at the power plant and operated using liquid ammonia under various patterns and loads. This process has taken a further step forward with the news that MI member Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. has joined a synthetic fuel production project studying the potential of a methanol fuel and CO2 transportation chain to and from Japan.
