Supporting Immigrant & Refugee-serving organizations to build digital capacity. Knowledge Mobilizer, focused on open working, & improving collaboration & replication of good ideas. Looking at the future of the sector.
Love this section title: "The future is a fusion of local and digital." Many noteworthy observations from Tahmid Rouf align with existing sector research which indicates the future of service delivery is hybrid and that we must be concerned with and address digital inclusion in our work: "Digitization has made cyberspace a new space of concern for organizational activities even before the pandemic. While the geographic scale of digital activities expanded during the pandemic, social groups such as isolated seniors were increasingly excluded due to limited digital literacy and resources. Like in-person activities, shared identities and experiences between participants remained a key driver behind bringing people together in cyberspace. Most DCO participants and practitioners agreed that the future of organizational activities was a fusion of digital and local in-person activities." The conclusion has an important insight that I think most service providers have yet to fully realize, which I've been talking about for some time - your community engagement must expand digitally but differently, and the actors, leaders, gatekeepers, influencers, facilitators, and spaces will be different from those you typically reach out to in person: "Generation 1.5 and 2 for many diasporas, such as the Bangladeshis in Toronto, are increasingly coming of age within superdiverse locales and claiming their stake in (parts of) the city. The next generation is keen digital adopters and advocates—they interact and operate in ways that are different from first-generation co-diasporic members. As the increasing adoption of cyberspace continues, we must pay attention to how the third sector evolves while effectively meeting the needs of migrants and diasporas in the city."
