The B-PEMS AugroJatra Climate Change Project participated in the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Expo 2024; a global event hosted by Bangladesh this year. The NAP Expo is an annual outreach event organized by the Least Developed Countries Expert Group under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that seeks to raise climate adaptation ambition by advancing the formulation and implementation of NAPs. Held from 22 to 25 April, the four-day climate adaption meet was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, in Dhaka and attended by around 500 delegates from 104 countries. B-PEMS was allocated a stall at the expo and hosted many visitors, including Prime Minister Hasina, to whom it introduced the project. An audio-visual presentation with the project overview of B-PEMS was screened three times at the Expo. https://lnkd.in/edPq_KyX

Blog 2 out of 3 with CGAP is out! Learn more about how we listened to #climate-affected people firsthand to unveil the reality of deteriorating climate #resilience in Nigeria and Bangladesh: https://lnkd.in/exjVXVJv
Since cyclone Alia hit Bangladesh in 2009, Masum Sheikh has moved four times and changed income-generating activities five times in an effort to find his way back to stability and build resilience to future shocks. These are common strategies for muddling through a climate shock, but not the same as long-term adaptation strategies. In our latest blog with Decodis and MicroSave Consulting (MSC), we consider the complexities of locally-led adaptation, and what distinguishes long-term adaptation strategies from simply muddling through. "The Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, particularly given it’s location on the Typhoon Belt and in the Pacific Ring of Fire. It has already faced $12.1Bn in economic loss and damages in the last 10 years, worth approximately twice the country’s education budget.” Hear from Secretary Robert Borje, Commissioner and Vice-Chair of the Philippines’ Climate Change Commission, present the country’s first National Adaptation Plan. This science-based, data-driven and actionable strategy represents a collaborative effort among various stakeholders to enhance climate resilience in the Philippines. Approaches to address climate risks and climate adaptation need to move away from linear equations that risk perceiving how people experience climate events as sequential and even timebound. As this blog I had the privilege of co-authoring with Daryl Collins, Graham A N Wright, and Peter Zetterli points out adaptation is anything but straight forward in part because the effects of climate change don’t wait in line to arrive: they are disruptive, compounding, and may never completely disappear. This makes adaptation anything but straightforward and therefore approaches to adaptation will look different by individual, by household, and by community. How can inclusive finance solutions then support a more contextualized response?

As climate change looms large, the planet is doubling down on its efforts to mitigate its ill effects. 🌧️ Several member countries of the ASEAN, for example, regularly experience severe flooding that threatens people’s safety and livelihoods, necessitating more proactive approaches to dealing with such disasters. In light of this, we at NIRAS are thrilled to share that we have begun working on a project that aims to fight against this issue among ASEAN member nations! 👏🏽 Through the project “Water-related Vulnerability Study in ASEAN Region” under the ASEAN EU-German Climate Action Programme, we will be preparing vulnerability maps and datasets showing water resource risks under different climate scenarios across Southeast Asian countries. 💧🧭 We will also identify the best practices when it comes to sustainable land use, tailored to the participating countries. In addition to this forward-thinking approach, we will help build the capacity of ASEAN partners so that they have the tools needed to address flood-related calamities in the future, even before they happen. 💙 Ultimately, the project’s goal is to promote systemic cooperation within the region, making our transition to greener practices easier. In the long run, we foresee this — and all of the projects we are a part of — to contribute in a tangible way to a more sustainable world. 🌏 #NIRASProjects #NIRASWins #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #ASEAN

In February, we took a significant step towards addressing climate change and its impact on Nigeria’s Northwest region. This happened at the Northwest Commissioners Summit on Climate Change, which was organised by Surge Africa Organisation and hosted by the Kano State Ministry of Environment. The regional leaders pledged to the Kano Declaration on Climate and Environment. This seven-point declaration addresses the urgent need to tackle climate change and aims to foster a sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon future for the Northwest region. The declaration will be translated into practical climate resilience and adaptation solutions at the regional, state, and community levels. Learn more about this commitment by clicking the link below to download or read the full declaration and action points. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d4_tt9an #SurgeAfricaOrg #ClimateAction #ClimateDeclaration

ZOiS Spotlight 1/2024 by Nafisa Mirzojamshedzoda Climate Change and Water Security in Central Asia "Nevertheless, the impacts of climate change on security and stability go beyond political and national boundaries, and addressing this issue requires a collective endeavour. Climate change necessitates collaboration among unconventional partners and has the potential to create avenues for addressing long-standing grievances over water, fostering trust, and enhancing relations between Central Asian countries and Afghanistan through economic and environmental cooperation." https://lnkd.in/eCk377xg
