I recently had the opportunity to attend a presentation by Hernan S., a partner and director from Bain & Company, organized by the Global Consulting Club at Thunderbird, Global Career Network and Arizona State University Graduate and Professional Student Association (ASU GPSA). The session provided a deep dive into the demanding nature of the consulting profession, emphasizing the relentless commitment required to excel. A key insight from the event was the concept of no "bad hair days" in consulting. This metaphor highlighted the constant need for excellence—consultants are expected to consistently perform at their highest level, showcasing sharp problem-solving skills and strategic thinking in every client interaction. Another valuable lesson discussed was the art of learning from experienced colleagues. Observing how they navigate complex conversations, the pertinent questions they ask, and their decision-making process offers a practical learning curve that goes beyond traditional training. This real-world observation is crucial for anyone looking to advance in their consulting career. The presentation also stressed the importance of taking complete breaks. Unplugging during vacations isn’t just beneficial; it’s necessary for sustaining long-term productivity and creativity in such a high-pressure field.
