📣 Following an announcement today at the Our Ocean Greece Conference, we are delighted to share that over $1m has been committed to fund 3 new Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance projects thanks to the governments of Canada and the UK!   Environment and Climate Change Canada is supporting Save The Waves Coalition to develop a parametric insurance product and surf ecosystem resilience trust fund in El Salvador to compensate coastal communities for revenue loss from the impacts of climate change. This builds on a concept phase supported by ORRAA through its Ocean Resilience Innovation Challenge (ORIC).   The UK’s Blue Planet Fund will support:   Coast 4C’s work in the Philippines to deliver regenerative seaweed farming packages to enhance the resilience of climate vulnerable coastal communities in and around MPAs, enhance MPA management, and inform the development of new financial products.   WaterAid Nigeria’s work with the Lagos State Partnership for Coastal Resilience Initiative, a public-private partnership, to build a consultative platform that enhances community capacity and develops innovative and sustainable nature-based solutions to improve coastal resilience.   💡 Making that announcement at the Our Ocean Conference in Greece, ORRAA’s Executive Director Karen Sack, said "Today's announcement is another step towards achieving ORRAA's mission to build the resilience of 250 million climate vulnerable coastal people by 2030. A new flagship recreation and tourism development is being planned for Hodson Bay in Athlone. The proposed Hodson Bay Waterfront Park would see the construction of a continuous promenade along the length of the Hodson Bay shoreline, an extension of the Waterways Ireland marina to provide up to 50 new berths for cruisers and visiting boats and the creation of a new immersive water experience including a café and a water sports facility. Also proposed in the ambitious plans would be a connection to the Mid-Shannon Wilderness Park Greenway as well as parking and associated facilities. The Waterfront Park would be located close to the existing Hodson Bay Hotel on the shores of Lough Ree on the River Shannon. The ambitious plans are being developed by Roscommon County Council and Waterways Ireland through funding provided by Fáilte Ireland under the EU Just Transition Fund, with the finalised plans to be developed for submission to An Bord Pleanala by February 2026.
