In our industry, January is statistically one of the most at-risk months when it comes to health and safety incidents. Winthrop Technologies' commitment to ensuring everyone who works with us goes home safely, every day, inspired our “Strong Start to 2024” campaign in order to defy that trend. Over the past month, each week was designed to tackle a different topic. Week 1 focused on "Let's Get Back in the Zone", reiterating the core principles of safety following the holiday period and regaining that crystal clear focus on safety. Week 2 was our "Line of Fire" focus, showcasing the importance of always being aware at work, ensuring that anyone on any of our projects is always prepared, in terms of awareness, equipment, and tools. The following week, we also highlighted the mental health impact of the new year, including Blue Monday, providing tools and resources as well as working with our partners at the Lighthouse Club to have 24/7 support available for anyone who needs it on any of our projects. Finally, to close out the month, we made sure to reemphasize our SLAM procedure. SLAM (Stop, Look, Assess, Manage) is a four-stage method to minimise risk in an easy to track and rationalise format. It is a core part of day-to-day safety and risk management for both workers and management. Although our "Strong Start to 2024" is coming to a close, our focus and commitment to safety and risk management in every aspect of our projects remains as strong as ever. As the year continues, we will be holding additional campaigns to maintain and build on our sterling safety record!

Ensuring safety in the workplace isn't just a legal obligation; it's a moral imperative. That's where ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) comes into play. ALARP is a principle that guides risk management, advocating for measures to be taken to reduce risks to the lowest possible level, balancing the cost and effort of implementing those measures against the degree of risk reduction they would achieve. In safety, striving for ALARP means continuously assessing hazards, implementing controls, and fostering a culture of vigilance. It's about more than just ticking boxes; it's about actively seeking out potential dangers and taking proactive steps to mitigate them. By embracing the ALARP principle, organizations demonstrate their commitment to the well-being of their employees, customers, and the community at large. It's not about cutting corners or taking shortcuts; it's about finding the most effective and efficient ways to keep everyone safe. Let's work together to make safety a priority, not just a checkbox on a list. Because when it comes to safety, there's no room for compromise. #ALARP #SafetyFirst #WorkplaceSafety 🛡️

The rule of thumb requires Health and Safety Executives to apply Five steps to risk assessment before updating the Review. A) Hazards Identification: The most dangerous ones are those that are overlooked. Identify them as per their class. B) Decide on who might be harmed and how: This must consider all workers including visitors and contractors. C) Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions: What is already being done and what farther control measure can be used to enhance the mitigation. D) Record your findings and implement them: Be specific on time as by when you expect the recommendations be implemented and give reasons. Asign the duties to a specific person and communicate to all worker in all hierarchies. E) Review your risk assessment and update if: Its a requirement to review nad update the police. This is Usually done within 6 months or 1 year. The top most Manager in the company has to show organization commitment by appending his signature. These five steps are not meant for ticking the boxes. Each step must be realistic to specific organisation depending on your activities. For example, a company that ventures in Hotel industry may have completely different hazards to a Mining industry and the likelihood and severity of the risk are worlds aparts.

Chair of the IIRSM Wales Branch | Director | Head of Risk at PCR Global | Owner & Developer at Fit for Purpose | Fellow of IoL, IIRSM and IOSH | Chartered Quality Professional at the Chartered Quality Institute
Thinking aloud … H&S Policy … ‘The Porsche’ If you’re new to H&S Risk Management this post may help 🙂 ❌ A H&S Policy is more than a single page, signed and dated by the Managing Director … … I would also argue it’s less than a huge generic document repository thats is often dropped off by some of the big H&S consultancies Whatever the configuration, the H&S Policy should include three recognisable component parts which records: ➡️ an intention ➡️ who does what ➡️ when they do it, and ➡️ how they do it: Section1 ✅ H&S Policy Statement of intent (above) - signed, communicated and reviewed appropriately Section 2 ✅ The ‘Responsibilities’ section which gives names, roles and responsibilities of those with specific H&S responsibility … listing names makes it personal for those with objectives but also for those who need to contact the responsible person Section 3 ✅ The ‘Arrangements’ section which records the practical arrangements for certain elements such as risk assessments, first aid, maintenance etc. Be specific about responsibilities, timelines etc., in the arrangements section The Porsche - Beware Beware of the massive set of generic documents that consultancys often provide … if this is what’s included in your ‘package’, then please be sure you make it specific to your company Large reams of documents never prevented anyone from getting injured, but can easily make it look like you don’t know your own Policy. Thanks for reading, Andy PCR Global Limited #riskassessment #healthandsafetyatwork

Safety is a collective effort, and it's important to talk about working together to manage risks at work. Risk management means envisioning what could go wrong if someone encounters a hazard – situations that could harm a person – and gauging its likelihood. Using control measures to eliminate or minimise these risks isn't just smart; it's essential. It prevents injuries, boosts worker well-being, and enhances work quality and productivity. This National Safe Work Month, make it a priority to talk about how WHS risks are handled at your workplace. Consider hosting a SafeTea event or a toolbox talk.
