I interviewed 15 SDRs for a closing position at Hivex last month. It was quite a challenge after years of hiring developers. Interviewing developers is usually more straightforward. In the first 10 minutes, I can gauge if they’re the right fit technically and culturally. But when it comes to recruiting SDRs, things become more complex. 1. Skills - With devs, it’s often about problem-solving and technical know-how. - SDRs, however, rely on soft skills that are difficult to measure, like emotional intelligence and adaptability. 2. Metrics - Developers have portfolios and Github repos to showcase their skills. - SDRs can’t “code” a cold call or “debug” a client meeting for you in real time. Because the scenarios for the call are fiction. 3. Empathy - SDRs tailor their communication style, which makes it tough to gauge their authentic selves during an interview. My tips: - Multiple interview rounds: Include team-based evaluations and situational tests. - Pre-hire assignments: Ask for a sales pitch or email sequence to gauge skills. - References: Prioritize them more highly than for technical roles.
