A couple of weeks ago, Ana Swanson published her investigation in The New York Times on how sanctioned companies in #China are still procuring leading U.S. chips to advance its military. The article describes cases where Chinese executives bypassed restrictions by creating new companies to procure U.S. chips on their behalf. WireScreen was leveraged in her investigation to uncover links between U.S. companies’ partner firms and the Chinese Academy of Sciences as well as other major defense contractors. Even as companies comply with #exportcontrols to the best of their ability, they have little control over their products after they are sold. Uncovering indications of possible diversion or #sanctions evasion is challenging for any compliance team, but being able to confirm linkages— whether they be shared executives, supply relationships, joint ventures or ownership relationships is one place to start.
