If you're like me, and you're probably not, the topic of vinyl records WILL come up more often than it should. The interesting part: nobody seems to know how they actually work. Or how they're made. How can a needle reading grooves produce such high fidelity music? The high level: 1️⃣ Analog Magic: Music is recorded and transformed into electrical signals, guiding a cutting stylus to etch intricate waveform patterns into the master disc. 2️⃣ Groove Dynamics: The grooves vary in depth and width, reflecting the frequency and amplitude of the sound. High frequencies create tightly packed grooves, while low frequencies form wider, deeper ones. 3️⃣ Stereo Sound: Vinyl grooves capture stereo sound with left and right channel information on opposite walls of the groove, delivering a full stereo experience. 4️⃣ Continuous Waveform: Unlike digital formats, vinyl grooves capture a continuous waveform, preserving all the nuances and details of the audio signal. 5️⃣ High-Resolution Detail: The precision of the cutting process ensures that even the finest details are captured, resulting in high-resolution sound. If you like watching things get made (who doesn't?) or are just curious about the process, here's a video from Jack White's pressing plant in Detroit: https://lnkd.in/gbAQxPEV

Esperanza Spalding and Milton Nascimento Announce Album, Share New Song “Outubro”. Esperanza Spalding has announced a new collaborative album with heralded Brazilian singer Milton Nascimento. Recorded in Brazil last year, Milton + Esperanza is due out August 9 via Concord. They’re also sharing the lead single, “Outubro”—a rework of the 1969 original that appeared on Nascimento’s Courage, making it the oldest song of his to be featured on the album—which you can watch the video below. Spanning 16 tracks, Milton + Esperanza is an ode to the friendship that’s blossomed between the two artists over the past decade plus. Five songs are re-imaginations of Nascimento’s own material, and two are interpretations of other classics: the Beatles’ “A Day in the Life” and Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song.” Milton + Esperanza also features Paul Simon, Dianne Reeves, Lianne La Havas, Maria Gadú, Tim Bernardes, Carolina Shorter, and Shabaka Hutchings, among others. Milton + Esperanza is Spalding’s first album since 2021’s Songwrights Apothecary Lab, which earned her a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Spalding won the same Grammy Award two years prior with her 2019 full-length, 12 Little Spells. Source: Pitchfork Video:
