We want to thank the Urban League of Hampton Roads, Inc. for letting Wise Media Studios lead several marketing efforts for their 3rd Annual Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration, hosted with the City of Portsmouth, Virginia and presented by Dollar Tree Stores / Family Dollar. We had an opportunity to celebrate on-site with incredible local musicians and the festival's headlining acts: Hi-Five and Syleena Johnson. This was an amazing opportunity as we continue to explore serving communities and navigating the music space with our backstag3 project. Here's a clip of the closing performance from Syleena featuring staff members and volunteers from the Urban League of Hampton Roads, courtesy of the Juneteenth All Access Pass (we designed that, too). 😉 💫

Question: How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives? My Answer: The best way to make an impact is to follow your passions and engage with organizations that align with those passions. There’s a common misconception that you need to be an artist or have an arts background to contribute to arts organizations. In reality, we need board members and volunteers with diverse skills and backgrounds—those who excel in finances, marketing, event organization, insurance, sales, and advocacy. Learn more about Hip Hop and higher education with Professor of Hip Hop at THE Ohio State University and recent Tonight Show guest, Jason D. Rawls, Ed.D aka J. Rawls We talked earlier this year on the world's most important Hip Hop podcast. WATCH HERE: https://lnkd.in/eemHa8aa
When it comes to scholarship and creative practice in the academy, I am working very hard to redefine what Hip Hop scholarship looks like. As a Hip Hop scholar, I am also a practitioner who creates Hip Hop music and who works to push the culture forward. Creative practice and scholarship at a level that lands you a spot on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, I think I’m making a pretty strong case! https://lnkd.in/gsZzYch9

Musician and concert designer | Executive and Artistic Director at Xenia Concerts | Co-director at Pocket Concerts
I'm excited to share that Xenia Concerts is working together with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada to create workshops on leadership, group dynamics, self-care, and accessibility for this year's cohort of young musicians. Kayla Carter, Christie Gray, and the whole NYO team have all been instrumental in getting this project running. We'll explore: -Leadership and Interpersonal Skills: Fostering collaboration and understanding within diverse ensembles. -Inclusive Teamwork: Building healthy boundaries and communication skills to create rewarding, inclusive experiences. -Self-Care Planning: Developing personalized plans to manage stress, recognize limits, and prioritize well-being for a sustainable career. -Inclusive Concert Design: Learning to curate concerts that welcome and resonate with diverse audiences, fostering a sense of belonging. There are many challenges for musicians in the orchestral world, and many situations in which people suffer due to unhealthy power dynamics. It's clear that the problems aren't going to disappear overnight. But we hope that by expanding people's skills and awareness at this crucial stage of development, we can help build a kinder, more supportive future for working artists in Canada. https://lnkd.in/guAyK6tX

Arts and culture are critical to the quality of life in a community. But arts and culture costs money - and communities need to invest in that talent if they want to reap the benefits. Municipalities should pay artists for the value they bring. https://buff.ly/3wbVwiS

At Gustaf inspired by David Hieatt and Mike Coulter we’ve become a little bit obsessed with writing our brand manifesto. Well, in the power of words, full stop. We’ve done courses on it and everything. And one big idea we buy into… Is doing things that no other events agency can do. It really helps us write things that no other events agency can write. Imagine being able to write about DJing the main stage at last week’s #KendalCalling To a crowd of 30,000. Talk about creating goosebump moments! If you’re planning an event – hey, maybe a festival themed get-together for your team – have a word with the folk who can say, and do, things that other event agencies just can’t.
There's nothing like dropping a tune from the main stage of a festival and hearing 30,000 people sing every word back...it's life-affirming. At Gustaf we're well known for putting smiles on faces through corporate events & engagement, but it's great to return to our roots - playing music & DJing. That's exactly what we did this weekend at Kendal Calling. In 2008 my band were given a shot at playing on the new music stage at Kendal. Little did I know that 16 years later I'd be DJing the main stage! Not only that but we also run the VIP area, which involves setting up our stretch tents & theming whilst also programming the entertainment for the space too. It's easily one of our annual highlights. Here's to 2025 🎉
