Our team read Dr. Froswa' Booker' book Empowering Charity: A New Narrative of Philanthropy for our monthly WISE book club. A required reading for our staff, we appreciate Dr. Booker's perspective and insights. Backed by research and experience, it is a valuable read for anyone investing or working in the southern sector of Dallas and beyond. We had a lively discussion about unconscious bias, power dynamics and how we can continue to self-reflect as individuals and as a company to ensure that we are walking alongside our clients and building strong relationships built on trust. We also committed to leveling up on our role as an intermediary between nonprofits and funders by providing general and direct feedback to funders about their grant applications and expectations of nonprofits. #nonprofits #philanthropy

Giving Circles have emerged as a viable vehicle to welcome new donors. For me, the most important takeaway from this report is that the bulk of donations go to local groups, which is a promising sign for smaller and newer nonprofits. This is exciting: https://lnkd.in/gX9f7Shx I love to see this surfacing. Collectively our impact can be so much greater! The average gift in these collectives is $1,000 or less, but when combined, the impact is so much greater! Why does it matter? The charities they support tend to be small community organizations. (Historically under-resourced and lacking capacity to apply for funding through traditional methods.) Rather than concentrate on metrics like "bang for the buck," the groups tend to be more concerned with racial equity and inclusion. <--- Creating equity in the funding space (see above.) Donations are broadly unrestricted. In the jargon, it's "trust-based philanthropy" that isn't tied to outcomes or specific projects. THIS MATTERS. So glad to see this trend gaining support.
