As of my last update in September 2024, there are approximately 40,000 to 50,000 pickleball courts worldwide. However, the sport is rapidly growing in popularity, and new courts are being built and converted from existing tennis courts every day! To give you an idea of the growth: - In 2020, there were around 20,000 pickleball courts globally. - By 2022, that number had doubled to around 40,000. While we're not yet at 1 lakh (100,000) #pickleball #courts, the sport's popularity and court construction are accelerating. It's possible that we'll reach that milestone in the next few years! Keep in mind that these numbers are estimates and may vary depending on the source. However, one thing is certain - pickleball is on fire, and its global presence is rapidly expanding!

Friday Fun Fact: Pickleball Anyone? Court tennis was the first paddle-and-ball game in the world. Henry VIII, one of the sport’s earliest and most fervent fans, erected the first pavilion at Hampton Court Palace, some 12 miles southwest of London, around 1527. It soon grew popular in France as well. By the late 16th century, the sport had spread across Europe and become a ubiquitous obsession: By 1596 Paris alone boasted more than 250 court tennis courts.   Today, an offshoot of the tennis family tree is the immensely fashionable game of pickleball that is now the fastest-growing sport in the United States..   It’s amazing growth in popularity is in large part due to aging boomers who no longer have the endurance or interest in the much more demanding sport of tennis. Also, existing tennis courts are easily redeployed into four pickleball courts and the required gear is not expensive. In short, an effective use of resources and ease of entry for the player.   Pickleball courts can pop up anywhere—backyards, parking lots, driveways—and perhaps soon the Olympics? With break-dancing, surfing, and skateboarding all included in the 2024 Paris Olympics, pickleball might not be far behind. The natural grass courts of Wimbledon are often considered to be the pinnacle of good quality tennis courts, but artificial grass can be a brilliant option for clubs and sports facilities needing a lower-maintenance option. The level of care needed for a natural grass court is a massive commitment. Real grass requires regular mowing, watering and fertilising to ensure it keeps growing in the best way possible. Artificial grass on the other hand, simply requires regular brushing! Artificial grass tennis courts are also often a more cost-effective option. There is an initial cost for installation which is an investment. However, the longevity of an artificial grass tennis court makes it most cost-effective in the long run. The "rivalry" between tennis and pickleball continues to intensify, with professionals taking shots at each other's sport and court accessibility making headlines in virtually every community. While the disdain continues from the tennis (and sometimes padel) world towards pickleball, the pickleball faithful should be warned of becoming what they hate. There is an increasing feeling of "elite-heat" in many pickleball communities. What was once a player-friendly alternative to tennis and a way to socialize has quickly become an intense environment of competition and exclusivity. Many higher-level players are seemingly less inclined to assist in bringing in new prospective pickleball players into the mix and more frequently are spurning healthy/growing public court communities in search of less-known, hidden ones. There is still a lot of good momentum in pickleball no matter how you slice it. Though now is the time to understand how the "pickle-boom" has made it this far. The fear is that pickleball may build the very silos and not bridges that others in the tennis world have before – less we face a similar fate of a new flavor-of-the-month sport.
