Unlike The Ocean Advocate, sharks don’t get hungry very often. They’re far from the voracious eating machines that they’re all too often portrayed as being. So, apart from thinking humans smell pretty bad, this is the second good reason why sharks aren’t as scary as you might think they are. Having just moved house, I am GIVING AWAY FREE spare copies of three of my books for those who would like to review either professionally or on sites like Amazon. DM me if you want a copy of: On Extinction: How we became estranged from nature (this was my first nonfiction book, very much a young persons response to the environmental crises) (2011) How to Be Animal: What it means to be human (an exploration of what follows from our animal nature, why we struggle to understand that we’re animals and the benefits that come from embracing our animality) (2021) Animal Dignity: Philosophical Reflections on Nonhuman Existence (edited volume of more scholarly work from around the world on why we can and should have a principle of respect for other species) (2023)

Political Officer at @ifaw EU/BE. I work on EU policies related to marine conservation, maritime transport, wildlife crime, SDGs, and biodiversity.
Communication. Together with cooperation, communication was a huge factor behind the story of human success. We can communicate in many ways, and it always fascinated me. I had to try other ways to get by, especially when travelling to a country where I did not know the language, and I loved that very much. It was part of the adventure and fun, and it always showed me that there are many ways how humans can understand each other. But #cetaceans are not that lucky. As Sharon Livermore said, they live in a "completely acoustic world" where "their ability to hear and be heard is key to their survival". But mainly because of human activities, they are losing the ability to communicate. It is scientifically proven that they are (and other #marine life) negatively affected by underwater noise #pollution because they rely on sound for survival - to find food, communicate with one another, avoid predators, reproduce and navigate. Underwater noise leads to disturbance and stress and drowns out critical sounds essential for survival. It can also affect critical predator-prey interactions and community structure. What is the main factor behind the noisy ocean that makes #whales isolated, confused, clueless and dead? Maritime transport. #Maritime #shipping carries more than 80% of all international trade, and in recent years, we have found out how important it is when it comes to logistics. There are between 60.000 to 80.000 ships in the #ocean at any moment. These ships produce such an enormous noise that many forms of marine life cannot hear. For many species, this is fatal. We know how whales singing sounds like. We have heard it, and it's very calming and pleasant for many people. Yet, with the ocean becoming a busy highway, that song can be lost to those it aims at. Therefore, it loses its purpose. The message is lost in the noise. Many then can be lost and in despair. As Sharon Livermore said, "Underwater noise is a pollutant, and it's an invisible pollutant to the human eye". While that is true, the fact is that this problem is not new. It's been known for decades, yet no legislation has been presented, and binding measures have been set. Luckily, ifaw has a solution. One thing that can be done immediately and could have a massive impact is slowing down #maritime transport. Reducing ship speeds by approximately 10%, which represents a maximum speed set at 75% of ship design speed, will reduce underwater radiated noise from shipping by 40%, reduce the risk of ships colliding with whales by 50%, and lower greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by 13% at the global level. This level of ship speed reduction would also reduce air pollutants, such as SOx and NOx, due to reduced fuel consumption. For action in #USA and #Canada - https://lnkd.in/ehRVc3WJ For action in the #EU - www.bluespeeds.org Let's #StopTheNoise. Let's allow all species to communicate and survive.
Unlike humans, who mainly rely on sight, whales live in a "completely acoustic world," says Sharon Livermore, director of marine conservation at ifaw. "Their ability to hear and be heard is key to their survival.” Whales sing on a low frequency, which makes it extremely difficult to communicate when human activity becomes part of the equation, as shipping vessels typically create noise along the same frequency.
