'Smartphones are too good' I've used Opal for about 3 years now, and (I think) my average screen time has reduced. Great slides in the link below, sharing the averages globally, and some great analogies and correlations to make sense of it all.

Why don’t diets work? Because there is more to it than just what you eat. New research from over 200K Wondr participants evaluated eating behavior patterns and weight loss. Study investigator and Wondr Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tim Church, MD, MPH, PhD weighed in: “We know that a one-size-fits-all approach is not effective when it comes to weight loss and that the when, how, and why we eat is just as important as what we eat. These study findings point to the need for personalized weight-loss curriculum based on individual circumstances such as eating behavior patterns.” For the full press release and additional insights visit: https://lnkd.in/gBviUjS9 #weightloss #dietculture #employeewellness #behavioralscience

What would you do if you had to create a definitive recommendation for what's healthy if the subject of what you are recommending... 1) Applied to everyone in some way (but you don't always know how) and happens everyday, 2) Has to align with the congnitive biases and strong beliefs of whomever is receiving the recommendation and expected to follow it, 3) Is not actually one thing, but potentially hundreds of thousands of different things (and the person receiving the advice has varying levels of awareness of this fact), 4) Is potentially compositional (the effect of one part you want to focus on probably changes based on the levels of the other parts), 5) The best evidence available you have as a reference is mostly (>95% at least) observational, 6) Within this best available evidence, you don't have any actual complete data available for the thing you are recommending, or how it fits within the rest of things that could also be affecting health. Creating an answer to the question is the challenge that dietary guidelines are taxed with solving. For reasons including but not limited to those above, it could be argued that solving this problem is one of the most difficult scientific and societal challenges of our time. Why does it feel like everyone is always fighting and arguing over the little stuff? #bias #data #evidence #uncertainty #causation #behavior #multivariate #society #individuals #chemicals #nutrients #food #diet #health #humility

Some reflections on my return from New York during a busy UN and Climate week. It was reassuring to see that food sector actors and stakeholders are recognising the need to tackle climate and health issues together with greater opportunities for innovation and impact include joint messaging on food labelling, joint funding, and sharing of expertise from both sectors. The role of the microbiome also featured heavily in conversations, with a greater recognition of its role in the prevention, and management, of lifestyle related diseases. We should start paying more attention, not only to our own gut, brain, skin microbiomes, but also of the soil biome affecting the nutrient quality of our food. There was a consensus that the failure of the translation of complex messaging on health and climate for the public, has led to an information void enabling misinformation to thrive, some of which is from seemingly credible sources. The personalisation of lifestyle behaviours, with bio-feedback from digital health tools, has not yet translated to tech-enabled quantification of our dietary choices. Nutrition, like most lifestyle behaviours, does not follow a one size fits all approach, and this is not refelcted in avaliable information for consumers. In summary, some interesting new topics were discussed at this year’s meetings, not all positive and not all heading in the right direction, but there was hope and signs of progress. #sustainablediets #healthydiets #microbiome Merijn Dols Patrick Filius Derek Yach Louie Blake
