This Pride Month let’s focus on making our workplaces and events genuinely inclusive without alienating the communities we’re trying to support 🏳️🌈 🚩A big red flag for many are “performative actions”—not putting your money where your mouth is when it comes to DEI. Sure, you can roll out a June-exclusive rainbow logo or a stock image, but what are you doing both publicly *AND* behind the scenes to foster an inclusive environment? Starting from scratch can be daunting, especially for allies in leadership roles who might face a classic case of good intentions but poor execution. 📜 For those of you who attended the excellent Meeting Professionals International (MPI) Insights event in April, you’ll recognise the document attached. In the spirit of sharing knowledge during this important month, I’ve put together an updated “DEI 101”—a bitesize data-driven look into the issues our diverse communities face in the workplace and events, and the benefits of investing in DEI initiatives. Here’s an extract: So often, I read guides to trans inclusion which say things like: “we must include our trans colleagues” “reach out to trans people (if you know any)” “how can workplaces recruit trans people?” It’s bizarre, because… not everyone is cis. So it’s probably more accurate to say: “equity for trans people is everyone’s responsibility” “reach out to trans people you know” “how can workplaces recruit, retain and support trans people?”

Here's a situation for y'all: Viraj heads the Business development unit at an organisation. Today he had a client meeting with Kiran. On the email communications, Viraj used to address Kiran as ‘Mr.’ and ‘He’. During the meeting, Varsha, who happened to know Kiran’s preferred pronouns, interjected to correct Viraj. Kiran, a trans person, preferred the pronouns, ‘she/her’. Here's what I'm curious about: - What should Viraj have done? - What role did Varsha play here?
