So, we're nearly a month on from the launch of Kodu.
Here's what I've learnt from the people I've met in January:
Industrial Designer vacancies are attracting hundreds of applications. Recent lay offs on the East Coast mean there are a load of really talented, but very active Industrial Designers on the market. This had led to:
❌ Candidates not receiving feedback.
❌ Hiring managers spending hours and hours screening resumes and portfolios.
❌ ID vacancies taking longer to fill.
❌ Proactive design firms snapping up the best talent, leaving others to start their process all over again.
On the other side, Mechanical Engineers are in very high demand and very short supply. Whilst and ID advert might have 200 applicants, you're lucky to get 20 for a Mech Eng role.
The Mechanical Engineers and Product Design Engineers I'm speaking to who are actively seeking work, all have at least 5 companies they're interviewing for. Which one will they end up working for? 🤔
The top things candidates are saying are important to them with regards to their next role are:
☑ Working on meaningful stuff. Stuff that has a positive impact on people and society and doesn't end up in land-fill.
☑ Flexibility. Most people enjoy going into the office/studio but like a day or two working from home - especially if the job doesn't actually require them to be onsite.
☑ Cultural fit. You're spending 40+ hours a week at work. Let's make it a nice place to be!
Those are just some of my observations. How's your January been? Let me know in the comments below.
Finally, if you want to talk about the above or how Kodu can help make recruitment much less painful, give me a call on +1 (862) 298 5088 or message me on here.

PS - The photo is from my vacation in Rome last summer. I had covid for the majority of my time there and this was the first day I could actually enjoy the food and wine. Now that January is over we can start looking forward to the summer again!
