I used to believe that an "open door policy" was the epitome of accessibility. My office door was literally always open, inviting anyone to walk in. But the truth is, it wasn’t enough. People hesitated, intimidated by the power dynamic or simply unsure of when it was the right time. It wasn’t until I started immersing myself in the daily grind of my team that things changed. Just as we judge an individual by their demeanor and interactions, a company's culture is often visible from the moment you step through the door. Culture is the omnipresent force in an organization that shapes itself, whether intentionally designed or left to happenstance. It silently permeates and influences the very essence of an organization. Even when making pivotal career decisions, culture is more than a mere consideration; it's a compass guiding us toward our professional home. We all yearn for a workplace where individuals collaborate on shared goals, where purpose isn't just a buzzword but a driving force behind everything we do. This one is close to me! Think about it - when you ask someone about the culture of their workplace, you hear words like "fun", "young", "start-up", "fast-paced", or in worst cases, "political" or "toxic". What information do these words really give us? But ask about values and it get's far more interesting. It's harder to remember values. Harder even to have real, practical examples of how values impact business and people decisions within a company. These are more likely to come by when values and culture are truly a lived experience, beyond a section on the careers page of a company's website or a slide in an onboarding presentation. For anyone interviewing with an organization, including Glow Worm Company, I would personally highly recommend asking your interviewers questions about the organization's values.
