Ernest Hemingway once said, “there are only two places in the world where we can live happy: at home and in Paris.” For a lucky few, they are one and the same.

The 2024 Summer Olympics are set to take place in Paris, bringing the world's top athletes to the French capital. The games will officially begin on July 26, 2024, and run through August 11, 2024. This marks the third time Paris has hosted the Summer Olympics, the previous occasions being in 1900 and 1924. The event promises to showcase spectacular sporting achievements against the backdrop of Paris's iconic landmarks.
Usually, when it comes to hosting mega sporting events, countries around the world are head over heels to stage it in their home. However, in the case of the Olympics, its an entirely different story. My article explains why and how.

💭❤️What’s Togetherness Got to Do with Creating Long-Term Loyal Customers?💭❤️
Justine Catterall a friend and top show producer, recently shared profound insights on the #ParisOlympics Opening Ceremony. Having worked together over the years, Justin’s ability to engage audiences in real life and through broadcast is unparalleled!
Here’s what I took away:
🌟 Human Connection is Key: Creating loyalty hinges on understanding that we are all human. Whether through live events, TV broadcast, or online, fostering genuine connections is paramount.
🎉 The Power of Live Events: Live events create an unmatched sense of togetherness. During my 17 years with #Virgin, we leveraged live events in music, film, and gaming to reach new audiences, drive loyalty, and reward business partners. Virgin knew how to make their audiences feel special.
🌐 Non-Linear Experiences: Breaking geographical barriers, broadcast & online content allows continuous engagement and builds vibrant communities. It has to engage and create a reaction or it creates fatigue.
💡 Creating Emotional Bonds: Togetherness turns an audience into a community. It’s the magic ingredient that makes your audience feel valued and connected. Linear experiences that merely make us watch often fail to create lasting loyalty.
🚀 Actionable Steps for Your Business:
🎯 Interactive Experiences: Encourage participation in your events and online platforms. As Justin says, what’s that key thing that will make everyone engage? A song, an action, a moment to share.
🎯 Storytelling: Use stories to forge emotional connections with your audience.
🎯 Recognition and Rewards: Celebrate your loyal customers both live and online to foster a sense of belonging.
🤑 The result? Whether through live events or digital platforms, fostering togetherness creates a ripple effect. Engaged audiences become communities that spread the word, drawing more people in.
Contagious called this Amplified Live after the London 2012 Olympics, where Justin played a key role. Togetherness is the art of turning an audience into engaged customers, members, or a community.
🙏 Thank you, Justin, for such a great insight!
⁉️ What strategies have you used to create this sense of togetherness in your business or brand? Share your experiences! 🌟

My thoughts on the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony:
I, like everyone else (particularly those of us who have been involved in Olympics Opening Ceremonies before), watched last night in fascination. I went to bed feeling confused and unsure as to what I felt about it all....but actually having slept on it I feel clearer.
It was heartbreaking that the weather was so awful...we spent months looking at weather forecasts for London 2012 and actually we got away lightly - the rain last night was horrific and I felt desperately sorry for everyone involved. However, I don't think it was the reason it has not been well received.
I really admired the creative intent in trying to break the mould and take things away from the norm and some of the riverside elements worked really well - I loved the dancers in the water in front of the gold building for example and I thought the silver horse riding along the river was well executed even if it did go on too long.....However conceiving a show that is impossible to rehearse is, I would say, a huge mistake and frankly I am surprised there were less massive cock-up moments and technical challenges.
But I think the crucial element that was missed was the lack of that TOGETHERNESS thing that is always so uplifting to us humans. That thing when you are part of a huge crowd and you all sing together to an amazing song or you all fall silent for some super poignant moment such as the coming together of the petals of the 2012 Olympic flame is massively underestimated - as humans feeling all connected, even for just a few seconds whether in the stadium or even just watching at home on a TV, is an extraordinarily bonding and uplifting thing.
Perhaps if they had compromised and maybe had the second half of the ceremony in the stadium they would have brought it all together and had more people onside..... However, regardless well done to the team for working so hard and battling the challenges that must have been HUGE in delivering it at all, I hope you managed to get a lie-in today!

The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games is the largest event ever to be organized in France.
Billions are expected to tune in as the Games—which will bring together more than 10,000 athletes from around the globe—kick off in Paris this week and run through mid-August.
With 19 days of competition and 325+ events, the Olympics will no doubt leave its mark on the city and the larger economy of France. Accelerated recovery is expected in Paris, with international arrivals to the city rising to 14% above 2019 levels (vs. France at just +11%).

As the MD of the then Arriva-owned sightseeing business, The Original Tour, during the 2012 London Olympics, I witnessed firsthand the significant business impact of the games.
Hosting the Olympics requires businesses within the city to plan for a four-year cycle: the year before, the year of, and the two years after the games. The pre-games year brings a welcome boost in tourism, but during the year of the games many businesses suffered significantly from the drop in visitor turnover. However, the good news is that the post-London games period saw an extraordinary spike in tourism over the following few years, thanks to positive publicity and pent-up demand.
Despite the challenges during the games, when viewed over four years, the event proved to be a considerable boost for business (the £20B bill to UK taxpayers is another conversation).
The takeaway for operators in a host city? While it’s wise for visitor-dependent businesses to tighten their belts during the year of the games, don’t skimp on investment programs. We even accelerated our capital projects to be ready for the golden years that followed and benefited enormously because of it. Bonne chance à Paris!

The Paris Olympics 2024
During previous Olympics... I was prone to support individuals [or teams] from Canada, UK, USA, France, and my home team Australia. But not this year. Sure I was thrilled by some of the individual/team performances from representative of those countries; however... The point is that these people all have oppressive governments which promote compliance.
Olympic Games are held so the youth of the world can come together with a spirit of goodwill towards others and the expectation of high achievement by all. These attributes were displayed by many many competitors [for example when Arisa Trew won gold for Australia] but not exemplified by the host nation.
Did you notice, as I did, that Russia was not there. Why not? Perhaps, Russia does not welcome the open displays of woke lunacy as evident in the Opening Ceremony. Perhaps, France was unable to accept the notion that all qualified competitors meet, and compete, in a spirit of cooperation, trust, and unity.
Paris has always been my favourite city; however, the wokeness that hangs over it today is a complete turn off. Vive la Paris and may all your citizens soon discard this woke virus.
Richard.

Paris pulled off the cheapest Olympics in modern history. Here is a cost break down of how they did it:
The Paris 2024 Olympics wrapped up a few weeks ago, and I was truly impressed not just by the athletes’ performances, but also by the infrastructure, design, and overall organization of the event.
As I watched the event, all I could think of was HOW MUCH MONEY WENT INTO THE OLYMPICS? Here’s a breakdown of what I discovered:
1. Cost of Paris 2024: The total expenditure for the Paris 2024 Olympics was around $8.2 billion. While this figure may seem expensive, it’s actually the most budget-friendly Olympics in recent history. For comparison:
- Tokyo 2020 spent $20 billion
- Rio 2016 spent $15.6 billion
- London 2012 spent $17.1 billion
2. Funding Sources:
Over 96% of budget to organize Paris 2024 came from:
- International Olympic Committee (IOC): €750 million
- Partner companies (e.g., Samsung, Coca-Cola, Airbnb): €470 million
- France: €1.27 billion
- Ticket sales: €1.1 billion
- Hospitality: €170 million
- Licensing: €127 million
- Additional funds from public and private sources
3. Notable Costs:
- $3.2 billion for building two new stadiums
- $348 million for security
4. Revenue Generate: Estimations suggest Paris could have made over $12 million from the Games, though exact figures are still unclear.
Did you watch the Olympics? How much did you initially think it would cost? And if the Olympics were to be hosted in Nigeria, which city do you think will host it and how much?

Just saw an American business say they're pulling their ad spend from the Olympics because of the opening ceremony.
Then I noticed the most liked reply to Emmanuel Macron's account describing it as a "satanic demonfest".
All because the opening ceremony had a couple of scenes that were a little risqué.
What were people expecting?
France literally invented the word risqué.
They also created cabaret.
Presumably these same people wouldn't watch Moulin Rouge?
Personally think Paris have nailed the Olympics so far:
1. Opening ceremony was unique in that it wasn't stuck in a stadium.
2. Unapologetically showcased the values that France is all about (Liberté etc.), while also covering their history (Marie Antoinette) and successful companies (Louis Vuitton).
3. Kept it under budget! The lowest cost Olympics in the 21st century. We need more of this. For comparison the UK went 4x over budget!
4. Didn't create future wasteland Olympics Parks by using existing infrastructure as much as possible.
5. Used it as an opportunity to improve the environment (e.g. clearing up the Seine).
6. Celine Dion sang on the Eiffel Tower. This felt like something out of a Bond movie. Totally spectacular.
7. Spread out the benefits with surfing in French Polynesia, sailing in Marseille, handball in Lille, football in Nice etc.
What did you think?
Were you appalled or delighted?
Would you sponsor the Olympics?
