Great documentary on the history of Minnesota’s Farmer-Labor Party. The “F”&“L” in DFL. This was an incredibly successful 3rd party; It gained such popularity that the Democrats were forced to extend an olive branch and absorb the party in an attempt to stop the exodus from their ranks. This is the kind of impact that 3rd parties can have on the political system. Minnesota has a history of independent thinking, courage, and boldness. And we’re not done yet! #IndependentThinkers #MinnesotaValues #ThirdPartyPolitics #ProgressiveTraditions #DiversePerspectives #PoliticalInnovation #MinnesotaPride #OpenMinds #InclusivePolitics https://lnkd.in/g-UQvn42

I love this. I am so sick of people making fun of the way he looks. Instead of talking about his behavior, they talk about his weight or appearance, which insults everyone else who is higher weight, and they don't deserve that. I find it childish and thoughtless. I'm glad this article was written. Some key quotes: "Despite plenty of substantive material (including those convictions) to critique, Trump’s body continues to be a go-to target for comedians, cartoonists and everyday Americans who dislike him for political or ethical reasons. Turning his looks into a punchline may get laughs, but this mockery reinforces biases that contribute to the body image struggles faced by men and boys." I'll add that it insults everyone, not only men and boys, but anyone who is in a larger body. And I appreciate the point the article makes that it's not only women and girls who struggle with body image/standards. "Because Trump himself is known for publicly bullying and body-shaming others, some may feel it’s only fair for him to be on the receiving end of the same kind of ad hominem attacks. Both [Aaron] Flores and [Stephen] Reeder cautioned, however, against “bullying the bully” — especially because it’s the innocent bystanders who are hurt most by these jokes...For opponents of Trump, it’s worth considering the implications of taking a page right out of his playbook: Is it OK to disparage someone’s appearance simply because you don’t like them? What does it say that you’re willing to imitate someone whose character you question?" I agree, the hypocrisy is hard to stomach. #antidiet #bodypositive #disorderedeating #bodyimage

For Planet Detroit & the New York & Michigan Solutions Journalism Collaborative, I wrote about WIN Network Detroit's efforts to support birthing parents in Detroit. Though the Black infant mortality rate has fallen in Michigan in recent decades, Black babies born in Michigan are still more likely to die compared to white infants. WIN Network Detroit supports birthing parents and provides unconscious bias training to medical professionals, but more work needs to be done to address the other challenges impacting Black birthing parents and babies. https://lnkd.in/dYC7TGZa

Do we have more in common than we think? 🤔 As someone who lives in Kansas City, straddling rural, suburban and urban communities, and also a 5 minute walk from a road aptly named "State Line" the bridges the Midwest (Kansas) and what some consider the South (Missouri) ... I think about this a lot. Check out latest research from my colleagues at RWJF, Ipsos and the American Communities Project trying to better understand this divided America that we live in. https://lnkd.in/dy7r9sKC

Businesswoman | Speaker | Community Builder | Social Impact Leader | Women-Owned Businesses Advocate | Stakeholder Engagement | Board Governance | I'm also passionate about traveling, food, wine, and my dog Lola.
One of my current passions is to see how I can impact women’s rights and community-building. As we approach what is likely to be a contentious presidential election, I think finding a way to encourage face-to-face connections is vital. Here are a few ideas: 1. Host a game night with your neighbors. 2. Nothing means more than inviting people into your home. Be brave and invite a mixture of new and old friends for a simple dinner party. 3. Go old school. Host a potluck in your home and give guests advance notice of a topic to discuss — could be serious (city budgets?) or fun (what animal best represents you?) 4. Surprise a friend with a birthday card (rather than an email) or a birthday treat!

Effectively advancing racial equity requires us to be skilled communicators and translators. With the topics of race and racial equity being so emotionally charged, it's even more important for us to be able to hold tense conversations with patience and openness. Deep gratitude to Jasmine N. Hall Ratliff, Executive Director of Build Missouri Health, for sharing her wisdom on this episode of #TheRACEPodcast! Listen to the full episode here 🎧 https://ow.ly/MYTW50TsLwx

A few days ago, we started sharing key insights that guide our efforts in reshaping narratives for a brighter, more inclusive future for Arkansas. Today, we're sharing part 3/5. Over the course of our Narrative journey, we have listened, learned, and mapped opportunities for connection and collaboration. Among the most important findings about our narrative terrain, we found that: — Mainstream and local media - the historic vehicle for content that shapes public policy - needs an infusion of long-term capital if it is to continue to be a vital and neutral source of information for the general public — Citizen journalists and community storytellers - often found within NPOs - are an integral part of the future of media and deserve/need robust and well-resourced platforms to disseminate their work — Connecting artists and storytellers to community organizations and community-centered conversations is one way to saturate the AR media ecosystem with equity-based narratives — Many Arkansans are missing access to vital news about their communities, laws, and policies because they are not plugged into mainstream media and, instead, receive their news from social media or trusted public figures Did you miss our first two #narrativechange lessons? Check out our recent posts to get caught up. #EquityinAction #NarrativeChange #WRF #RelentlessPursuit
