Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)’s Post

Exciting news! Last week, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) presented Metro with a 2024 Gold Safety Award for our groundbreaking Station Overrun/Just Culture Pilot program. The APTA Gold Safety Award honors public transportation systems that have demonstrated innovative concepts or effective problem-solving techniques not previously applied in the public transportation industry. The Station Overrun/Just Culture Pilot program revolutionized how Metro investigates safety events by identifying all contributing factors, such as procedural flaws, training issues, or environmental conditions. It assesses whether an operator’s actions were deliberate and provides managers with a consistent framework to decide if disciplinary action is necessary or if alternative measures like additional training or procedural changes would be more effective in preventing future incidents.
