Did you know that Slow The Flow is going to the Houses of Parliament this Tuesday? Thanks to the support of MP Holly Lynch, we’ll be sharing the importance and benefits of natural flood management with MPs and members. Many MP’s have already said they will be there, this is a positive step and a chance for our voices to be heard. Here’s our key messages: 👉🏻 The outdated framework for funding of NFM needs rebalancing. NFM is a different approach, that is cost effective and value for money 👉🏻 Implementation of Schedule 3 of the FWMA for England ASAP, ensuring all new developments have to include SuDS 👉🏻The need for the development of green skills and expertise. NFM officers should be present in all Local Authorities 👉🏻 Education is key for long term understanding and success. This should be part of the primary school curriculum 👉🏻 NFM and SuDS have a positive impact on Combined Sewer Outfalls (CSO) and should be prioritised by OFWAT / funded by water companies. Automatic right to combined sewer connection should be removed.
We’re embarking on a momentous journey to Parliament! With the help of Holly Lynch we are hosting a reception at the Houses of Parliament on 12th March to share the impactful work we do in Calderdale and why we think nature based solutions should be prioritised at a national level. We’ll meet with MP’s from across the country that can shape policies and champion sustainable water practices. Watch this space for more details. #slowtheflow #naturalfloodmanagement #parliament #waterpolicy #naturebasedsolutions #nature #london #westminster #calderdale

Day 5: The Power of Civil Society 📢🌱 When it comes to land, grassroots organizations and local communities often know best. NGOs and community groups play a huge role in making sure land policies reflect the real needs of people on the ground. They advocate for marginalized voices and ensure that those most affected by land policies get a say in how those policies are shaped. It’s a reminder that change often starts from the ground up. Civil society keeps land governance accountable and inclusive. How have you seen civil society make a difference in land management?

How do we tackle #homelessness? Could it be as simple as creating more #housing? Sadly, no. But housing supply and delivery is an important part of the puzzle so reading Addleshaw Goddard Alternative Living Sector Manifesto was an interesting read! As the dust settles on a new government, and the first 100 days gets into full swing, these are the sorts of conversations we should be having. What do I love? ✅ Meaningful funding of a profession and expertise there to safeguard the sustainability of our land, buildings and communities ✅ Thinking creatively about land use and acquisition, and championing (good) development and sustainable construction ✅ Ending societal emphasis on home ownership as a lifegoal ✅ Engaging with the different needs of people according to their age and stage in life What would I develop differently? 🚀 I **would** abolish section 21s altogether! 🚀 I **would** engage with the idea of whole life course neighbourhoods 🚀 I **would** talk more about financing and affordability What would you do in your first 100 days? #livingsector #homelessness #first100days
In true Channel 4 style, we in the Addleshaw Goddard #living sector team have done an alternative (non-party political) manifesto for the #livingsector. We propose some #housing #policies that we would like to see whoever turns up at Number 10 on Friday morning; most quite serious but some with a little hint of fun. Would be interested in some other takes on what we have suggested and other ideas. Thanks to contributors Catherine Williams Sarah Atkinson Andy McVeigh Andrew Martin and Lucy Butterworth for their thoughts. #policy #weloveliving

Bryan Frierson, the Assistant Public Information Officer at the Passaic Valley Water Commission, shares the importance of involving the community in water projects. "One of the many projects we're doing is a giant light service line replacement program where we're removing thousands of led service lines from the cities of Patterson, Passaic, Clifton, and the borough of Prospect Park. Now we've had some pushback from residents. Again, this goes back to building trust, right? So basically residents in Patterson and Passaic were not comfortable totally letting people in because they don't look like them. I suggested, all right, well, if I'm for, I know what the city's like, I would feel more comfortable if there was someone at my door that looks like me. And that's no fault of their own. It's just the society that we live in. And that's been actually working. We started doing that, implementing that, sending people that are actually from the neighborhood to go knock on doors, and it's been working. So we're getting better feedback and people are actually letting our people in to inspect their waterline and whatnot." This is an example of doing DEI work in your local municipality with intention. Join us for the Future of DEI in AEC to learn how your organization can do the same.
