One key strength of a critical educator is their ability to question “taken-for-granteds”, policies, strategies and methods which have been upheld as the best or only ways of educating or “what works”. A critical educator will question who determines what a method “working” means. They would question if “working” means dominated, docile and compliant children or thriving, autonomous, capable children who have developed a sense of belonging and responsibility within a learning community. A critical educator cares about the state of children’s lives and their experiences and how these affect their education. They continue to resist norms, even within education systems, that add to any negative, unjust conditions of children’s lives.

In an online survey study of 92 adults with EA/TEF (a thematic analysis exploring the psychological well-being of adults born with EA), 5 themes were generated during the analysis: ‘Negative Experience with Healthcare Professionals,’ ‘The Perception of Surgical Scars,’ ‘The Psychosocial Consequences of Dysphagia,’ ‘The Legacy of Medical Trauma,’ and ‘Resilience in the Face of Adversity." #raredisease #rarediseaseawareness
