Each story carries the profound weight of families torn apart and communities grappling with grief, underscoring the shared responsibility we all have to protect our children. As we reflect on these losses, we must confront a critical question: what proactive steps are we taking to safeguard our children? The safety of our young ones must be our top priority. This entails rigorous safety audits, improved infrastructure, and a steadfast commitment to educating all stakeholders—students, educators, parents, and local communities—about safety protocols and emergency response strategies. The time for action is NOW. We cannot afford to wait for another tragedy to ignite change. The loss of these 21 lives is a wake-up call, reminding us that we cannot accept such events as part of our norm. It is imperative that we prioritise immediate and systemic changes to ensure the safety and well-being of children in schools. The 21 caskets of the young boys whose lives were lost in the #HillsideSchoolEndarasha fire tragedy, is truly heartbreaking. The pain and grief of the parents who lost their children are unimaginable, and their classmates and school community are equally traumatized by this tragic event. My deepest prayers go out to them, asking the Lord to provide comfort and strength during this incredibly difficult time. To the government and all stakeholders, it’s crucial that we prioritize school safety audits and equip the entire school ecosystem—learners, teachers, school leaders, non-teaching staff, and the local community—with the knowledge and tools necessary to ensure the safety and security of our schools. Beautiful and heartwarming. 5 values I found in this short scene: (1) Compassion: The children showed compassion by sharing their food with the hungry child, even though they had limited resources themselves. (2) Empathy: They were able to understand the child's situation and feel empathy for his hunger. (3) Generosity: The children were generous in giving away part of their own food, demonstrating a willingness to help others. (3) Kindness: Their actions were kind and thoughtful, showing consideration for the well-being of their classmate.
