The devil is in the details. We hope this railway concession 2.0 sweeping across Africa will be better than its 90s version. Version 1.0 was promoted and foisted on African governments as part of the structural adjustment medication. In most cases, the state neither had capacity to negotiate effectively with private parties nor was the process managed transparently. Absence of strong autonomous regulators and failure of the state to inject equity were among the factors that led to failures. The market power conceded to the private sector was exploited fully by the latter with neither returns nor improvements to railway capacity or performance, resulting into the continued loss of rail market share now standing at 90/10 in favour of road transport. If the hemorrhage of state resources meant for railways rehabilitation due to corruption are added, then the death of railways as a viable mode for freight transport was guaranteed. So the challenge today is how can the lessons from Africa Railways Concessions 1.0 be applied to ensure that version 2.0 succeeds?
Looking forward to learning the full Concession details

World record = pit stop perfection‼️ Implementing lean thinking in F1 🏎️ … Teamwork & practice make Champions….visualization how effective the Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) lean approach can be in reducing changeovers. It allows for shorter batch sizes and thus reduces throughput time. As in a formula one pit stop, there are internal and external elements: ➡️ Internal elements: These are all the process steps that need to be done while the machine (or race car 🏎️) is stoped. ➡️ External elements: These are all the process steps that you can prepare before, while the machine is still producing parts. In those pit stop Videos we mostly see only the internal processes. But it would be even more interesting to see all the preparations for the pit stop and all the checklists that are accomplished before the driver is even arriving. ✅ Preparation is key ✅ Use precise locations for everything: The car drives in and stops in a precisely marked position. ✅ Follow a standardized procedure: These exist for all common scenarios; wheel change, nose cone replacement, punctures, cleaning rubbish from the air intakes.. ✅ Practise, practise, practise: The crew practise their set procedures as a team and individuals practise specific skills. The crew on the high speed air guns practise getting on the nut first time. The jack men practise clean lifts. ✅ Adapt the equipment: The most frequently damaged parts are designed with quick changeovers is mind. On the nose cone, a quick release catch is used instead of multiple sets of time consuming bolts. The front and rear jacks have quick release levers as no powered device can be used. ✅ ✅ Never stop looking for #waste: The length of time for F1 pit stops has changed drastically over the years. Preparation is key in lean thinking for pit stops because it ensures efficiency and effectiveness. It involves planning both internal and external elements, like process steps that can be prepared before the machine stops. This meticulous preparation allows for shorter batch sizes, reducing throughput time, and ensures that every action during the pit stop is precise and standardized, leading to optimal performance and safety.

Setup v F1 I get tired of having F1 pit stops be the paragon for lean setup reduction (SMED). It is true that the lean tool “setup reduction” is about analyzing each step of a process and reducing the overall time and waste in it – much like what has happened in auto racing pit stops. However, there are three stark differences. 1) When I do a setup reduction I have a shoe-string budget given that the point of cost savings is to spend as little money as possible. 2) Technology becomes a barrier in operations environments so the technology I try to use in setup reduction often does not typically exceed the complexity of a can opener. 3) Once the setup has been completed, the resulting process has to be executable by the least competent employee with zero practice. So, other than the budget, technology, and staffing, you could say that F1 Pit Stops and setup reduction are similar. Clearly the people who cite F1 pit stops as the paragon for setup reduction have never actually done a setup reduction. If they had then they would know that in reality setup reductions get similar results but involve small budgets, low technology, and open staffing as opposed to millions of dollars, car redesign, and selective recruiting of specialized positions with year-round training.
