Esports World Cup Foundation is throwing down $60,000,000 for the prize pool. Just imagine — this is a 15 million jump from last year! No doubt, this is huge for all of us in the eSports industry, and I've just gotta share my thoughts on it: On the one hand, it's super cool — more cash means more new faces, teams, and sponsors. More investment = more chances and opportunities for eSports to grow at every level 💪 But let's not forget there's another side to this. We're already seeing big teams hunt players from other disciplines and form temporary squads just for this one event. This creates some kind of paradox and even hurts eSports. So, where do I stand? I'd love to see budgets used for the long-term growth of eSports. Picture something like the Football World Cup: qualifiers in different countries, a long, drawn-out format with stages and knockouts, and only a few direct invites. This kind of setup could help unearth and nurture new talents worldwide, shine the spotlight on lesser-known games, and build a sturdy eSports ecosystem. The Crooked Business of Esports --- Esports sold itself as the sport of the future - a world where video game tournaments would surpass the NBA and NFL, where anyone could grind from amateur to superstar, where gaming would be a viable profession, and stadiums would be packed with thousands of fans. All this value in theory would be captured by new teams and leagues who could monetize these eyeballs through tickets, merchandise, and media rights - the same way that the NBA, NFL, and Premier League have each used viewership to rake in billions over decades. There was so much hype that everyone expected the economics to solve itself over time. Brands jumped in to sponsor. Even the billionaire owners of traditional sports joined in, enticed by the prospect of owning the next Dallas Cowboys or Manchester United. With the media and Wall Street all heralding esports as the next big thing, this future seemed certain. Fast forward to 2024 and esports has fallen apart. Many teams have shut down having run out of money or been sold for parts. Viewership has declined and questions have been raised on whether this audience is valuable when Twitch itself can’t turn a profit. Publishers have cut support and shuttered leagues. Many pros have exited esports, channeling their starpower into more sustainable streaming careers or leaving gaming behind entirely. The fall of esports has never been covered by mainstream media. As a result, the industry remains rife with con artists, scammers, and shell companies who continue to run the scene with little scrutiny. The pump-and-dump has continued and the people running esports these days make even the most delusional Silicon Valley venture capitalists and founders look like saints and angels. ❓ Why the Olympic Esports Games will mean a new paradigm for the esports industry? 📖 This is one of a series of post regarding this topic. If you want to read the previous post you can follow this link: https://lnkd.in/dP5X5S3W "The organization of the Olympic Esports Games will fully reflect and be in fully compliance with the Olympic Charter and the Olympic values." Thomas Bach. The Olympic Charter is the basis of the olympic movement. Chapter 1 "The Olympic Movement" 1.1.2: "The three main constituents of the Olympic Movement are the International Olympic Committee (“IOC”), the International Sports Federations (“IFs”) and the National Olympic Committees (“NOCs”)." The IOC members are people elected individually. The NOCs have their own way in the different countries. IFs are composed by national federations from around the world But for esports, the new main character in this story is the IFs. National Federations such as DEVA - Argentinian Esports & Videogames Association, are one of hundreds around the world that are promoting esports. In the esports industry, having a publisher that owns the IP of the game titles do not give the same power to esports federations as the traditional sports federations have. Nowadays the esports work as a private industry considering esport as entertainment or culture, not as a sport. As like the Olympic Charter claims, it requieres a federation to be part of the olympic movement, therefor be considered a sport. (Note: Being part of the olympic movement doesn't mean being part of the olympic games, this happens with motorsport for example). Suddenly what the IOC is doing is letting the publishers know that if they want their games to be part of the Olympic Movement they shall allow federations to promote them. This also opens a new era were esports can be part of national policies of promoting sport, as most of countries do invest in the promotion of sport and now esports can be inside of that category. #Esports #OEG #OlympicEsportsGames #IOC #Paris2024

Strategic exit from Valorant and repositioning of AEX-1 in esports Since the inception of the Valorant Challengers DACH league two years ago, AEX-1 has been an integral part of the DACH Valorant scene. Our mission has always been to give young talents the opportunity to compete with the best at the highest level and to develop themselves further. As a Swiss team, we have aimed to represent the southern region in this competition in the best possible way. Despite not always succeeding against the strong competition, we have always defended the title of "the Undescendables". After extensive analysis and in light of the changing esports landscape in the DACH region, including the end of the ESL Gaming era, we have decided to transfer our hashtag #Valorant division and the associated Challengers DACH league spot to Eintracht Frankfurt Esports. This step marks a pause in our Esports activities for the time being. This strategic decision allows us to reposition ourselves and develop a future-oriented strategy to respond to the ever-changing challenges and opportunities in esports. We remain passionate about esports and are determined to re-engage in the future of esports with a clear plan and new partnerships.
