The European Union (#EU) has recently started to propose dedicated chapters on Sustainable Food Systems (#SFS), which encapsulates the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of food #sustainability in a holistic manner. The article by Rena Eliz Hänel explores the question of whether and in which ways the regulatory approach advanced in SFS chapters in recent EU trade agreements reflects the holistic approach of the SFS framework. It argues that although SFS chapters cover a broad range of policy issues, they do not address the key issues of food security and demand-side interventions. Closing LIEI 51(4), Rena Eliz Hänel analyzes the novel 'Sustainable Food Systems' chapters in EU Trade Agreements, arguing that they focus on regulatory cooperation while lacking commitments that could use trade to steer food production toward sustainable practices. https://lnkd.in/d7kSw6uG

📚 Winter reading list EU leaders should be elected based on their programmes and on the results in the last legislature – but there is little reviewing of what has been done in the different policy fields. To make it easier to assess the successes and failures, we worked on two “stocktaking” papers, the first reviewing the EU’s agrifood policies and the second looking at the green trade agenda. 🚜Towards a sustainable agri-food system in Europe: Lessons from the last EU mandate and strategies for the future https://lnkd.in/e3Ge5f-4 🖊️ Sophia Caiati, Andrea Pratelli 🌳 From rhetoric to action: Taking stock of the green trade agenda of von der Leyen’s “geopolitical” Commission https://lnkd.in/dhhSYJuB 🖊️ Cláudia Azevedo , Pascal Lamy , Geneviève Pons-Deladrière, Helena van Thiel

🥥 We must develop international environmental standards for agri-food production to support the long-term sustainability of agricultural food systems. One approach to doing so is Codex Planetarius, which establishes minimum environmental requirements for global food trade 🥑 📢 This 1-pager assesses how the World Trade Organisation can support in developing and implementing Codex Planetarius. 🍽️ Harmonizing Environmental Standards for Global Food Production is essential to sustainable food systems. The World Trade Organization (WTO) can advance the development – and uptake – of a future Codex Planetarius. To justify a measure under GATT Article XX, the channels are through: ➡️ The harmonization provisions in the WTO Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement and ➡️ The Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement ➡️ General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Here’s why this matters: ✅ It sets global environmental standards for agriculture. ✅ It helps protect biodiversity and natural resources. ✅ It ensures a level playing field for global trade while considering environmental impact. Learn more about how the WTO can advance the uptake of a future Codex Planetarius through our report on Harmonizing environmental standards for food production here: https://shorturl.at/lfEPL GCRF Trade, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub) UNEP-WCMC World Trade Organization #FoodStandards #SustainableAgriculture #TradeForTomorrow #NaturePositiveTrade

Yesterday we had a meeting of the Economic Committee for Foreign Trade Issues (WAA) at the Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft (BMEL) in #Berlin. In addition to current trade policy issues, the focus of this meeting was on the coherence and implementation of the supply chain regulations (Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive of the EU 🇪🇺) in the agricultural and food sector 🌾. An important topic for our Industry! There is still a lot to be done and and a lot more to be considered. Not only in companies 🏭, also in politics! #sustainability #CSDDD #BMEL #Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichtengesetz

🌱 Towards a more inclusive and sustainable EU agricultural trade 🌍 The EU has positioned itself as a global leader in sustainable food systems, using trade policy as a key lever for environmental action. However, achieving true sustainability requires a more inclusive and cooperative approach. 🤝 Together with the support of GCRF Trade, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub) , our analysts Cláudia Azevedo, Sophia Hub, Pascal Lamy and Geneviève Pons-Deladrière explore how the EU can use its trade instruments to advance global food systems sustainability. 💡 They provide critical recommendations for advancing the EU’s food systems sustainability, highlighting two key areas: the successful implementation of the EU Regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR) and the role of trade agreements as drivers of sustainable food systems. 🌟 Breaking news! 🌍🎉 We are pleased to share that the European Union has officially passed the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), marking a significant milestone in our journey towards fairer trade practices. Our advocacy for the inclusion of living income and fair purchasing practices to protect cocoa farmers has been successful. Small farmers, who are often vulnerable to the fluctuations of low market prices, will now benefit from increased stability and sustainability in their livelihoods. Addressing poverty and instability is crucial, as these are well-known root causes of modern slavery. The CSDDD mandates that companies work toward a living income for farmers as part of their due diligence obligations. This directive will have a profound impact on cocoa-producing countries, helping farmers sustain their living standards and preventing labor exploitation, child labor, and other forms of modern slavery. E.U. member states have two years to harmonize this directive into national law, after which all provisions will come into force. This is a transformative step for the industry and a major victory for farmers and their communities. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter, fairer future in global trade. The latest news regarding the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) indicates that the European Council has agreed to support the Commission's recommendation to delay the EUDR's implementation for one additional year. The European Parliament is set to vote on this proposal during the plenary session scheduled for November 13-14, 2024. This move can have significant implications for environmental strategies and stakeholder involvement throughout Europe. Who Pays for the Implementation of Sustainability-Driven Regulations? This week, I’m in Vienna at the #UNIDO Conference, discussing the impact of EU regulations on global supply chains. Smallholder farmers face significant challenges in meeting compliance requirements under regulations like #EUDR and #CSDDD indirectly. These barriers not only threaten their livelihoods but also risk unintended exclusion from international markets. Sustainability-driven regulations must be fair, inclusive, and practical—ensuring that farmers are supported, not penalized. Governments, companies, and policymakers must work together to create realistic compliance pathways that protect both people and the planet. 💬 What solutions do you see for making compliance more accessible for smallholder farmers? Let’s keep the conversation going. #SustainableTrade #FairTrade #SupplyChains #RegulatoryCompliance

Time for the European Commission to really deliver! Now more than ever.... The need for #implementing legislation to be delivered at least two years before compliance is something that should apply to all pieces of legislation, also the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation #PPWR.....We have seen on the Single Use Plastics Directive #SUP how the drafting of implementing measures has moved very slowly and in some cases, just a few months before 2025 compliance dates, we are still waiting for them....Business cannot operate in this way. Obligation for compliance should be shared! We as business do our job to invest to comply, but policymakers need to do their job in developing the tools to actually enable that compliance.
FoodDrinkEurope has joined 27 other trade association in endorsing the European Commission’s approach to cut administrative burden relief and simplify regulation over the next 5 years. In our joint statement today, we call on the Commission to focus in particular on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) as an essential priority and to this end, policymakers should take 3 key steps: 1. Immediately launch a comprehensive competitiveness assessment of CS3D to identify where simplification, clarification and burden reduction should be achieved within upcoming implementing legislation. 2. Adopt any guidelines or implementing legislation at least two years before compliance with the legislation becomes mandatory otherwise extend the transition period. 3. Make harmonisation and interoperability of rules key pillars in supporting Europe’s competitiveness and ensuring a well-functioning Single Market.
