Revitalizing internal medicine: challenges and solutions Internal medicine presents an enticing prospect for numerous medical students owing to its expansive array of career pathways. Nevertheless, the field grapples with certain challenges. Notably, there's a concerning decline in physician interest in internal medicine, particularly within cognitive specialties and primary care. This trend can be attributed to the dual challenges of reduced reimbursement rates and escalating administrative demands. Encouragingly, viable solutions have been proposed to address these issues. What is imperative now is for our leaders, both at the federal level and within the private sector, to take decisive action. By doing so, we can cultivate a sustainable workforce poised to serve generations to come. William Fox is chair-elect, American College of Physicians Board of Regents. In their new Forefront article, Vinaya Gogineni, Wendy Barr, and Robert L. Phillips, Jr from The Family Institute at Northwestern University, UMass Chan Medical School, and The Center for Professionalism and Value in Healthcare discuss how the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education program equips doctors to go where they are most needed; Yet, this investment in advancing medical equity is under threat. "The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted widespread health disparities and revealed the importance of primary care in improving the health of the population. A 2021 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reaffirmed that primary care is the only sector of the health care system with demonstrated capacity to increase life expectancy and reduce disparities. The report also identified THCGME programs as ideal training models for enhancing access to primary care in underserved areas, and the only consistently accountable model of federally funded training for physicians." Grateful to have participated in the National Workshop for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis hosted by the Sri Ramachandra Faculty of Nursing on May 3rd and 4th. It was enlightening to see the depth of research involved in medical papers and reviews, with valuable insights shared by experienced researchers. Learning that MeSH terms are updated manually for each article in PubMed was most surprising. The hands-on sessions for enhancing search strategies in PubMed and utilizing MetaXL for forest plots were particularly insightful. #SystematicReview #MetaAnalysis
