Agree with Mary Curnock Cook CBE on this! We need to pause defunding of BTECs. Would be a cost-neutral decision to prevent disastrous impact on participation in higher education for under-represented groups. School and college leaders been clear with me on this: BTECs very different options to new T-levels which are more akin to A-levels. https://lnkd.in/edXJ3JfA

I know we’ve all been inundated with bad news about the FAFSA. And that bad news is real, no doubt. But this month, rather than dwell on the problems, Angela Jones, J.D. (Director of our Washington State Initiative) and I are shouting out some promising solutions in our newsletters. We’ve been happy to see great work at the state level (e.g., quick-response grants from the College Success Foundation that funded Washington organizations to provide creative FAFSA completion support) and the national (e.g., National College Attainment Network (NCAN) FAFSA tracker and continued push for clarity and improvements.) Right now, we need more partners to amplify two big national efforts: 1. NCAN’s #DoTheFAFSA social media campaign targeting underrepresented students. They need reinforcements to blanket Instagram, TikTok, YouTube with this important message. 2. New federal funds for organizations directly assisting students and families with the FAFSA. If that's your work, apply ASAP for these support dollars. Finishing the FAFSA is make-or-break for so many students' futures. Who's with me to make some noise this summer? Give the newsletters (both Pathways and Postsecondary) a read and let's rally together to #DoTheFAFSA! https://lnkd.in/gxGDqdRZ

Here's the letter the Department of Education should really send: Dear presidents and chancellors, We are writing today to acknowledge that we screwed up. We’ve completely mishandled our end of modernizing the FAFSA. It’s a mess and we are fully responsible for the whole thing, sort of. Yes, it’s complicated and there is blame to go around. But, ultimately, we are the responsible party and we’ve not done what we promised to do. We’ve let millions of students down and our screw up will have prolonged impact. While we’ve always been honest in our communications, we’ve not always been transparent about known difficulties and have stopped short of telling you the full story. The truth is that we’ve not held our contractor of the Department of Education accountable. Yes, more time and funding would have been helpful. But, we underestimated the work and complexity (even though you warned us) of the project and embraced hope as our main strategy. We would like to blame Congress for not providing sufficient oversight and funding, but we wouldn’t have wanted to answer their questions had they asked; we’d have looked inept and incompetent. We’ve undermined your trust in the Department of Education as a reliable partner, which stinks because we really rely on you to give us credibility and a platform. We are not sure how to earn that trust back, but we will figure out some way to make you more reliant about resources or maybe we will turn up the heat on audits to show you we have some teeth! Even though we admit to screwing up on FAFSA Simplification, we’d like you to celebrate all of the other things we’ve done. And, please don’t forget that this is really about the long-term benefits of a simplified FAFSA. Really, what’s one cycle? Most of you will survive. It's good to see this school recognised for being the 'Best Value for Money', my understanding being this award is based purely on a fees v academic results algorithm. However, in the year ahead, with the likely addition of VAT on fees, ALL independent schools need to articulate Value for Money, and not just for academic results, but for every aspect of value in their school's offer. Being able to demonstrate VfM will be crucial for some schools just to stay afloat. There are so many ways we can articulate VfM through sound, knowledgeable and brave marketing. #valueformoney #schoolsmarketing #schoolleadership #independentschools https://lnkd.in/gKzB_ssJ
