Lessons from Every City #26 Chiloquin, OR--- I spent Labor Day weekend in Southern Oregon and discovered Train Mountain Museum, home of the world's largest miniature hobbyist railroad, spanning 37 miles. Most people don't know the meaning of Labor Day or other holidays for that matter. Labor Day is a strange celebration without rituals, except for shopping and barbecuing. For most people it simply marks the last weekend of summer and the start of the school year. The holiday’s founders in the late 1800s envisioned something very different from what the day has become. The founders were looking for two things: a means of unifying union workers and a reduction in work time. The organizers of the first Labor Day were interested in creating an event that brought different types of workers together to meet each other and recognize their common interests. Labor Day came about because workers felt they were spending too many hours and days on the job. In the 1830s, manufacturing workers were putting in 70-hour weeks on average. Sixty years later, in 1890, hours of work had dropped, although the average manufacturing worker still toiled in a factory 60 hours a week. These long working hours caused many union organizers to focus on winning a shorter eight-hour work day. They also focused on getting workers more days off, such as the Labor Day holiday, and reducing the workweek to just six days. These early organizers clearly won since the most recent data show that the average person working in manufacturing is employed for a bit over 40 hours a week and most people work only five days a week. We have the same holidays each year, but unless it's required to know the meaning, like Thanksgiving, Cinco de Mayo, St. Patrick's Day, we stay in our lane. Now, for the quote, "climb where equipment is required" means to expand your knowledge and learn something even if it doesn't matter. Let's embrace opportunities to expand our knowledge, even when it may seem unnecessary. Keep learning as if it's a necessity.

Stole this from my momma! Thanks Angie Sellers,MA, LAPC Prior to the inception of the holiday, labor unions were advocating for “very specific improvements in their working conditions,”Most workers in America were indulging in physically or mentally taxing jobs—and doing so all seven days of the week, with no real limit to the hours per day. So, through resilience and a dose of well-intentioned stubbornness, the labor unions saw some amazing wins! In short, they are the reason we now have a 40-hour work week and company benefits such as paid time off, vacation time, and sick leave! Labor Day honors the common American workers who helped change the way our country views its workforce, allowing for economic freedom and liberty. we can more than likely accredit the holiday to two people: Peter J. McGuire and Matthew Maguire, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The first unofficial Labor Day dates back to September 5, 1882, taking place in New York City. Though it took some time, states slowly but surely began adapting the holiday as their own over the years. By June 28, 1894, Labor Day was an official holiday according to Congress, passing an act that declared the holiday be celebrated on the first Monday in September of each year. Happy Labor Day! #eascarpenters #unionpride #laborday #unioncarpenter

Happy Labor Day weekend to all of our The Healthcare "She" Suite followers! How do you plan to celebrate this federal holiday? Did you know that this holiday has been around since the late nineteenth century? Labor Day is rooted in a rich tradition, and was established to recognize the many contributions that workers have made around strength, prosperity, and well-being in the United States. In 1894 President Grover Cleveland ensured that Labor Day would always be the first Monday of September. As this holiday is celebrated by all, leaders should take a moment to reflect on a key leadership principle: Treat your employees how you would want to be treated. Check out the attached article and 3 key principles shared: 1.) Happy workers are more productive workers——Show genuine interest. 2.) The principle of reciprocity can work for you——Show kindness it is repaid two fold. 3.) Good leaders engender loyalty from those they lead——Be observant of those in your organization. “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Theodore Roosevelt Happy Labor Day https://lnkd.in/gSqimVbm

What you need to know about Labor Day: In the late 1800s in America, workers were fighting for their rights. They faced 12-hour days in harsh conditions. They wanted change. Labor Day has its origins in the labor union movement. Specifically the 8-hr day movement, Which advocated for 8 hours for work 8 hours for recreation 8 hours for rest. The first Labor Day was celebrated in 1882 in New York City. Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday in 1887. It became an official holiday in 1894. It’s now celebrated every first Monday in September. • Labor Day is the third most popular day for grilling in America. • It unofficially signifies the end of wearing white fashionably. • The holiday is also considered the 'unofficial NFL season kickoff'. Labor Day isn't just a pause from work. It’s an opportunity to commemorate the strides we’ve made in labor rights and to honor the ongoing journey to better working conditions. What's one Labor Day tradition you cherish? Share it below! 👇🏼 P.S. still getting those morning workouts in on the holiday! What are you doing to stay active today?

Why "Labor Day" isn't just another holiday. (And what it really means for you.) Most see Labor Day as a break. But do you know its true history? It’s more than BBQs and last summer trips. It’s a day born from struggle and sweat. A day that honors those who fought for change. Late 1800s: Workers demanded fair wages and hours. Strikes and protests swept across industries. They risked their jobs, health, and safety. And because of them, we have 8-hour workdays. Weekends off, and better conditions. But here’s the truth: We often forget this fight today. We get comfortable with small wins. But there are still battles to fight. Low wages, burnout, and toxic workplaces. Real people face these issues every day. Here are 2 effective ways I use contribute to help labours: 1️⃣ Support Fair Wages: Advocate for fair compensation. 2️⃣ Promote Safe Working Conditions: Ensure every worker’s safety. What Is Labor Day? Today we celebrate Labor Day, but what is Labor Day? Without looking at a calendar most of us can quickly retort it is the first Monday in September; the gateway holiday that leaves sunscreen and popsicles behind and ushers in pumpkin spice lattes and all things Halloween. Labor Day shows itself each year as a national holiday giving many workers a day of respite from the grinding work week, and kids get that last little taste of summer that remains in their grasp before the school year becomes more hectic. For the women who are carrying a bowling ball sized baby in their wombs, Labor Day means something very different. They are hoping for labor on Labor Day. This nine-month journey has been another theory about the existence of Labor Day. The truth about this holiday is very simple. It is not about scheduling one last backyard BBQ (although you can count me in!) or birthing an infant. Labor Day was implemented in the 1800’s when working conditions were poor. The government stepped in to raise the spirits of the laborers and allow them a dedicated day to rest. Yes, it is as simple as that. It is a holiday that has been celebrated for generations and most likely will continue on for many more. Now that you know the facts about Labor Day, the only subject to be debated at your BBQs is whether or not it is appropriate to wear white after Labor Day! I’m not a fashionista so do not ask me. What are you doing (and wearing) this Labor Day? Let me know in the comments.
