According to the BWWC’s 2021 Gender and Racial Wage Gap Measurement results, collected directly from employer payroll systems, the average gender wage gap in Greater Boston is 30¢. Our partner, Women's Money Matters, empowers women to improve their financial health. The gender wage gap is getting smaller in many counties, but there is no county where the average earnings of women working full-time are equal to that of men. Look at economic indicators for women in your Ohio county: commsols.com/OhioWomen2023

The wage gap for Black women compared to non-Hispanic white men is 69 cents for full time, year-round workers. The wage gap widens to 66 cents when looking at all Black women earners (including full-time, part-time and part-year workers), as compared to all working non-Hispanic white men. #BlackWomensEqualPayDay

The gender wage gap isn't just a number—it's a reflection of the economic hurdles women face daily. Here are some facts: 💰 Women on average earn 82% less than a man’s dollar. 💰 Black women on average earn 70% less than a man’s dollar. 💰 Hispanic women on average earn 65% less than a man’s dollar. 💰 A study by the National Women's Law Center (NWLC), estimated that on average, a woman will lose $407,760 over a 40-year career due to the wage gap. 💰 For African-American women the disparities are even greater…it is estimated we will lose as much as $946,120 over their careers when compared due to the wage gap. Support Pay Transparency: Encourage workplaces to be transparent about their pay scales to expose and rectify disparities. Over the past two decades, progress in closing the gender wage gap has been slow. On average, women still make 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man, and the gap is far more pervasive for women of color. Research from The Ascend Fund tells us that electing women into office combats the gender wage gap. Elected women introduce and pass more bills and prioritize legislation that benefits women, children, and families. They champion legislation that reduces inequity, such as promoting salary transparency, banning salary history inquiries, and requiring employers to report on salary bands by race and gender. Native women’s career losses based on today’s wage gap would amount to more than $1 million in 20 states. In 2021, the most recent data available, Native women working full-time, year-round, were typically paid only 57 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men. Today is #EqualPayDay! March 12 marks how far into 2024 women have to work—on top of their labor from 2023—simply to match what men were paid in 2023. Women were paid 21.8% less on average than men last year. What causes the gender wage gap? A combination of occupational segregation, devaluation of women’s work, societal norms, and discrimination. Black and Hispanic women experience the largest wage gaps due to compounded discrimination based on both gender and race/ethnicity. Little progress has been made in the past thirty years to narrow the gender wage gap. The rate has remained mostly flat since 1994. There is no silver bullet to solving pay equity, but policies like requiring employers to post pay bands and prohibiting employers from asking about pay history can help close the gap. Raising the federal minimum wage and protecting and strengthening workers’ rights to bargain collectively for better wages and benefits would also help address this inequity.
