We are very much aligned with and pleased to support This Girl Can's #LetsLiftTheCurfew campaign and its five calls for change aimed at addressing the safety concerns that many women face when getting active outdoors, which only worsen in winter. Their new research shows that 72% of women in the UK change their outdoor activity routines during winter, 1 in four (24%) ensure to take well-lit routes, almost a quarter (23%) avoid certain areas altogether and one in five (20%) glance behind them to ensure they’re not being followed. The five calls are: 1. Wider cultural awareness of women’s safety issues and education that teaches respect for and allyship with women. 2. Comprehensive reporting frameworks against misogynistic behavior at all levels and in all environments. 3. Improved information sharing regarding the prevalence and locations of sexual harassment to inform solutions that better protect women. 4. Spaces designed with a focus on women’s safety, including public outdoor areas for sports and physical activity. 5. Continued collaboration with partners to create a bigger movement to tackle the safety fears that contribute to the gender activity gap. We are proud to be actively working to deploy community-based programs that address these critical issues and empower women in their own neighborhoods. Thrive Luncheon - Closing the Gap June 6, 2024 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM (EDT) Description Women in the U.S. workforce continue to struggle for equal pay and face challenges advancing in their careers. While women make up nearly half of the workforce, research shows that women continue to earn less than men and struggle for equal representation. “A 20-year-old woman just starting full-time, year-round work stands to lose $407,760 over a 40-year career compared to her male counterpart” (National Women’s Law Center Surprisingly, some of the industries with the largest pay gaps have the greatest share of female workers. Women outnumber men in earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees and are nearly on par in getting medical and legal degrees and still men are more likely than women to get the highest paying leadership roles. The gender pay gap also varies considerably by race and ethnicity, and by other demographics. Join us as the Chamber’s Senior VP of Programs & Initiatives, Celeste Granger, presents an overview of the disparity in pay and leadership opportunities for women in the workforce. Following the presentation, we’ll hear from panelists versed in how we can work to identify the barriers and close the gap.
